A friend from Canada sent me this yesterday. I thought others may enjoy it.

I forgot to mention that the image was taken about 75km north of Grande Prairie, Alberta

I think it would be nice to see an occasional aurora in my sky. However, I do not think the CME it would take and what that would do to the electrical grid would be worth it. I live at 36 deg N Latitude. I understand they are beautiful.

Thank you for sharing.

I lived in the NWT for a while. Aurora were common and we had some spectacular displays. Also had a few observing nights when we just had to pack up because it filled most of the sky. Nothing for it but grab a camp chair and enjoy the show :)

i agree, when working in northern Alberta and NWT some nights the aurora were directly overhead so you could see all of the different colours. Some nights we would just sit out and watch for hours.

Hi Gabrielle. Wow, I almost missed this great thread. A wonderful Aurora Borealis image from your friend in norther Alberta. I haven't seen one since we moved from northeast Illinois to Florida. Thanks for posting this Gabrielle, and the very best of regards.

Best display I've ever seen was on Isle Royale National Park out in Lake Superior - horizon to horizon and it lasted for hours.

For me, it was on Kvaloya, Noway. A friend and I stayed at Yggdrasiltunet, a lovely farmstay about 60km south of Tromso and around 70N latitude. We were lucky enough to have a Kp5 Auroral storm and clear skies. Unfortunately I lost most of the original hi res images in a disk crash where I had not backed up while travelling. I have some smallish jpegs that I had uploaded to my web site. Most importantly I have some great memories of enjoying a spectacular all of sky event with my friend for 6 hours. The aurora descended straight over our heads and lit up the ground at our feet.

The picture is taken with a full frame fisheye pointing up very high with the horizon all around the edge of frame some in frame some out of frame and taken at the peak of the event when the aurora was descending over us most rapidly.

The lens produces an image that is 180 degrees corner to corner.

Big Dipper is in the background at centre of frame.
