Leonids - 2020

#1

Post by Ed217 »

Three images from this weeks (11/17/20) Leonids meteor shower. These are from about 1000 pictures taken with a Nikon D5600. Exposure for each was 8 seconds and ISO 125 using a Nikon 35mm F1.8 lens. Capture times between 3AM to 6AM. Most all were taken on automatic using interval timing, 125 pictures in each session, which is about 25 minutes worth.

The tripod mounted camera was aimed at Leo and didn’t change over the evening of images. This was my first attempt at a meteor shower and all were taken in the downtown area (which is clearly not a dark skies location).

The three selected images are cropped from the original. I only saw the first of these 3, which was quite bright and went all the way across the field of view. The exposure ended just as it entered the area, so only got about ¼ of it in the image.

If you ever get up my way (Culpeper), let me know. We have a great privately owned observatory (Morning Calm Observatory) that hosts a 30 inch Obsession!

Sounds like a good idea! Once this COVID stuff settles down some in the coming year, would love to see your setup.
