Big night out

#1

Post by OzEclipse »

Last Friday night I led a field trip/nightscape shoot for my current astrophotography class.

I drove out to the Boorowa district late afternoon arriving around sunset. I had already chosen the old rail bridge as one location. I wanted to arrive in the light so I could walk around and identify trip, slip and fall hazards before I had 8 people walking around in the dark.

I first drove further out and stored the location of this canola field in my GPS so we could find it again in the dark. One nightscape of this canola field captured at ISO25000 was posted in another thread called "Fields of Gold." Another captured at ISO 3200 is below.
Cunningar Bridge-5849.jpg

Then returned to the bridge to check out the ground conditions around the bridge.

Cunningar Bridge-5850.jpg

So it was 550pm and the class not due to arrive for 3 hrs??? I listened to the news on the radio, emailed my class with the above pictures of the two locations. I checked in to TSS (of course), facebook, email etc. Then I ate a sandwich I'd made myself for dinner. 630pm.... Hmm 2.5 hrs to go. Going to be a long night. I put the seat back and had a bit of a rest. At 745pm astronomical twilight had ended and a prominent Zodiacal light was reaching up to the head of Scorpius. I took the camera out and captured a couple of attempts. Passing cars spoilt a couple of attempts. This one had no headlights.
Cunningar Bridge-5856-2.jpg
The Milky Way doesn't set until after midnight at this latitude (34S) so I didn't want to start them too early. The group arrived around 9pm. After a quick sky orientation with laser pointer, we prepared to walk out to the bridge. I left my camera in the car and walked out to the bridge leading the group. It's only a 100m walk but with wet very slippery clay in places and vey uneven ground. After an hour of nightscape by starlight shooting, I walked back to the car, grabbed my camera, tripod, remote release and a variable brightness orange filtered LED light source. I walked to a spot well away from the group and where my light was equidistant from the bridge and well away from the group, I illuminated the bridge with the filtered source and with a plain led flashlight. After that was done, I liked the aspect and the fact that the group were all clustered together on the right of the bridge so I rattled off a 3 frame panorama.
Cunningar Bridge-5871-Pano-Edit.jpg
After that I returned to the group, took two shots one with, one without the group visible.
This one is destined to be used for future course promotions
Cunningar Bridge-5872.jpg
This one is for me.
Cunningar Bridge-5873.jpg
Damp ground was giving everybody cold feet so we retreated back to the cars and drove 7km west to the canola field. The whole group set up for a star trail sequence. Unfortunately, our cameras dewed over before the sequence could be completed. However some of the early images turned out quite well. I have already posted another frame in this sequence in a different post.
Cunningar Bridge-5892-2-1500px.jpg
We wound up at 130am and drove home arriving at 245.

All in all, a very enjoyable and productive night.

Joe

Rob,
That would be great. If they ever open the border and you're down this way, do get in touch. My new home(Bendick Murrell, north of Young) is really well placed for this type of work. I usually come to Qld at least once a year(obviously not this year  ) to spend time with my brother & nephew and visit other family and friends. Might be able to catch up with you then.

Not sure if you are affiliated with any Qld astro clubs? Don't think I've seen you at any AAQ meetings. I am currently talking with the AAQ about delivering this same Nightscape course to its members next year. Although I live in the south, I have been affiliated with the AAQ since 1978 and have a number of close long time friends among its membership. If this works out, I will deliver the class sessions via zoom then some of my friends up there will run the field trip(s), I'll conduct followup & reviews via zoom. I will start off by giving a main item talk at a monthly meeting next year then decide about the course later.
yobbo89 wrote: Tue Sep 15, 2020 6:21 pm so in the last image, is this the small magnetic cloud or large ?
Both Magellanic Clouds are visible in the image. SMC is top of frame and centre, LMC is below and a little to the left. The image sequence was supposed to be part of a circumpolar star trail sequence so camera is pointing roughly south(ish).

Kind Regards

Joe

Great images Joe . They all look good. I liked the original you posted a few days back with the red glow in the bottom right, and the croping showed the two Magellanic Clouds in the image. Until I saw your red night lights I thought it must have been tail lights of your car.. is the big glow above the canola, The town of Yass ? And you've finished moving now to the new home ?

Hi Phill,

Thanks.

I was trying to shoot a sequence for a star trail. Unfortunately, heavy dewing put that to bed. So the image the other day was a different image to the one in this thread. That one was an initial test shot captured at ISO25000. The red light was some sort of AF or ranging light coming off a Nikon D7200 camera owned by one of the course participants. There were about 5 cameras lined up next to mine.

The image in this post was captured at ISO 3200 some time later.

The big glow is a mine near the town of Galong and the smaller glow to the right is Galong.

If you are interested in having a go at it on one of your trips to your relatives in Junee, I think it is here
34°28'51.2"S 148°36'11.0"E
Canola-location.jpg
Location map

Although there should be much better canola around Junee. I think there is a tourist drive called "The Canola Way," that runs around Harden, Wallandbeen, Cootamundra and Junee.

Haven't moved yet and it's Bendick Murrell, north of Young. I had to look into a few possible issues with the house identified by building inspections. Everything checked out and contracts should exchange today, settlement in 6 weeks (Oct 28) all going smoothly. I will be teaching a workshop on astrophoto image processing using Lightroom and Photoshop one night a week in Canberra through November and I have some renovation to do on my Canberra home so there will be a lot of back and forth for several months.

I went to the area near the house one night and checked out local lighting. The house is a creamy off white colour. It's so dark that I couldn't even see the house exterior from 150m away.

cheers
Joe
