Fridays Moon and a Jason

#1

Post by Thefatkitty »

Hi all, hope you've had a good day :D

I thought I'd post this simply because I'm rather pleased with how this worked. I have an old 80mm f/15 Jason I bought for $80; a dollar a millimeter. It came with a .965 diagonal and small focuser knobs. The focuser itself is rock solid, as a lot of these older R&P's were/are. Too bad the attached parts are crap....

It turns out the tube on the focuser that the .965 diagonal holder screws into has the exact same OD as a regular 1.25" eyepiece, etc. How convenient. So I used some 1.5mm plastic, duct tape, and two hose clamps to make a bracket. One problem solved.

I can't get a 10:1 focuser for this, at least not a GSO; the ID of the tube is an odd size it seems. So I decided to go the "jar lid" route, which will at least give me some leverage :D I decided to put the same size jar lid on both sides as well. I'm glad I did, it's so much easier to focus holding onto both as well as them being bigger.

I've had a long week, and getting in last night, the sky was lousy as it had snowed most of the day. However, I was forecasted some clear skies at 9PM. Well, it turned into more like 9:45, and there was still a lot of humidity and some high thins floating about. I was surprised, as the temperature was 21F (-6C). I had set the scope out on the mount at 9:00, so it was certainly cooled. I know fracs are supposedly "ready to go" at a moments notice, but I've found that a temperature drop from room temperature to something like 40F (4C) or lower requires some cooling time to have a steady view.

By 10PM the sky looked to be as good as it was going to get, and it turned out I was right. I had connected my T3/1100D into the Jason about 20 minutes before, so I took 40 shots at ISO 1600 and 1/250, 1/320, and 1/500th respectively. The ones at 1/320th exposure time were the best of the lot. It's funny, at the same ISO with my C80-HD at f/11.4, I'd be using 1/1000th exposure... By 10:45 the thins were starting to thicken, so I gave up on anything visual, and in I went.

These are the pics. I know the Moon shot isn't the best, but neither were my sky conditions. Or even the scope I'm using  Though I did notice the CA "ring" I usually get with my C80 is almost nonexistent... :D

Awesome! That's a really nice lunar capture with the Jason, Mark! Sweet!

I have a co-worker named Jason. He was regaling me with a tale of one Christmas morning when he was young. His older brother was gifted with a telescope for Christmas. So in pops my co-worker see this nice shiny new telescope standing beside the Christmas tree. He immediately thought it was his because it had his name embossed on the side.

Excellent capture, ol' buddy!
