The Moon with a Sears 60mm f/11.6

Post by Thefatkitty »

Hi all, hope all is good and your skies are clear.

I've had rain and high winds here pretty much nonstop since Wednesday afternoon. At noon today, the rain stopped, the temps dropped, and the humidity kicked up a notch. Why did that sound like Dr. Seuss?

Anyways, I've been bored, and that leads to thinking and possibly spending. This time I avoided the spending. I was thinking about an old early '70's Sears 60mm I've had for about 4 years and used as many times.
I bought it for $20; the mount was broken at the base. Can't weld that stuff, so I used the mount that my Tasco 4.5 came on. The 4.5 was too much scope for the mount, especially with the counterweight, so I made a dob base for the scope. I then had the equivalent of a CG2 for the 60mm.
I made a clamshell and bracket to fasten the 60mm to the mount, changed the counterweight with a lighter one, and now it's solid. Too bad they weren't sold like this back then.

I had the bright idea of attaching a DSLR to the back of it, so I did. This is a lousy cellphone pic of it taken outside tonight (I keep forgetting I have another T3 ), and the "ID label", if you will:

01.jpg
01a.jpg

To attach the camera, I used a strip of plastic and a layer of duct tape. Talk about high-tech. I then firmly pushed it all together onto the drawtube. I kid you not, it was rock solid. After being out in the 4C (40F) temps, I had to let the scope & camera warm up to get them apart!

02.jpg

And in case you care, the clamshell. Some flat bar, a bolt, another bolt for clamping a bicycle cabe, and a bicycle spoke. Works just like a "real" clamshell, is felt lined inside, and looks good, at least in the dark... I'm such a hick

03.jpg

Enough of that though :D After putting together and taking out all this, it had cleared somewhat, though it was still humid and the clouds were flying about. The Moon was low in the south-west, so I focused as best I could through the haze and took 150 shots at ISO 800, and 1/40th & 1/30th second exposures. The 1/30th pics came out the best, so I stacked 30 of the best with PIPP and Autostakkert2. The final processing was in ImPPG. Not bad, considering the conditions:

Nov_2_19_60mm.png

You can see that even the crappy finder scope on this thing is lined up... Use what you have ;)

04.jpg

Then the clouds started to really pour in, so I called it quits and came downstairs to process all that. It is supposed to clear up later, so I've prepared myself:
05.jpg
06.jpg
That the original .965 diagonal with an H20mm in it to the left  I realize the views through the 1.25" diagonal and lens will be vignetted due to the drawtube, but with the Towa objective, Celestron star diagonal with its prism, and the Fujiyama KK's, I think I've got a fairly nice drivetrain, all made in Japan....;)

Well, time to go see if it's cleared up. And see what's in the fridge :D

Have a good day/night, everyone!
Mark

Thank you both Bryan and Mark! :D

Appreciate the comments Bryan. Though "ingenuity" is not the first word that comes to my mind... Nor my family's, depending on what I do
I'll have to try this again when its clearer out.

Thanks Mark, and yes, sometimes these little scopes can still have a use :D
No, Sarah was asleep, as well as Mum, and I heard the cat snoring under the living room table as I was walking out the door... Sometimes I think I live alone  And I will give her a big hello for sure.

While I was waiting for it to clear up, I swapped the wooden legs for some metal ones. A bit lighter and even sturdier I found. Plus the added bonus is that they fold in for going up the stairs with it:D

IMG_0088 (2).jpg

After going outside and waiting a bit, I had about 10 minutes of relative clarity, so I tried some visual on the Pleiades with my 18mm KK. All I can say is Wow! and that's all I said for the first few minutes. I just couldn't believe the pinpoint stars and the velvet background. And the seeing was really not good with the moisture in the air, so this was totally unexpected. About half the cluster fit into my field of view, so I spent the 10 minutes or so I had just going through it. I tried my 25mm and was rewarded with about 3/4 of the cluster. Just stunning. My 12.5mm was pushing it a bit, and I had about 1 minute with it. But for those few seconds of stillness in the air...
I might be off on this, but so far I rate this 60mm scope right up there with my orange Celestron C80 by Vixen, which is my "pride and joy" for visual. Can't wait for a really clear night to test that theory!

And now the clouds are back for the next while, and I should go to bed eventually, it's 1AM here

Hope you both have a fine night!
Mark

Thanks Peter and nice to hear from you! :D Yeah, this scope has been sitting in my basement with a blanket over it for quite some time. Never thought to put a camera or a decent diagonal/lens in it until a few days ago. Who knew? My small aperture hidden gem...

Much appreciated and have a great day!

A big hello from both of us, I hope Sarah is doing well :)
I do like your clamshell, at first look I did not realize you had made it.
You deserve more credit for the modifications you do they are usually quite good :)

Now that's too cool! Talk about old school imaging. I've thought about doing some DSO imaging with a forty-year old telephoto that used a T-adapter to fit my equally old OM2N Olympus 35mm camera, but I never really got around to it. The telephoto is basically of petzval construction with a cemented doublet objective and an extra flattner lens at the rear. With a Canon EOS T-adapter it will actually focus on either of my 77D or 80D Canon camera bodies! It will probably exhibit some of that endearing chromatic aberrations of yore but that's what would make any images I get so endearing! Yepper, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Love the effort and experimentation that went into a very nice lunar image.

That's pretty much the same scope I grew up observing with in the 1970s. Mine was a 60mm, f11.7 rebranded Tasco refractor. I can't remember if my folks bought it from Sears or Montgomery Wards. As I recall, the first objects I viewed with it were Venus and Comet Kohoutek.

I'd love to acquire one today and see what DSOs it could reveal in dark skies with modern eyepieces... Would be a fun project.

Scopes: Meade LX10 8" SCT, Explore Scientific AR102 Refractor on ES Twilight 1 Mount, Oberwerks 15X70 Binos, Nikon Action Extreme 10X50 Binos.
Eyepieces: ES 68* 24mm, ES 68* 20mm, ES 82* 11mm, ES 82* 8.8mm
Observing: Messier Objects--110/110, H1 Objects-- 400/400. Hundreds of additional NGC Objects. Significant Comets: Kohoutek, West, Halley, Hyakatake, Hale-Bopp, McNair, Neowise. Transits of Mercury and Venus.
