More Cowbell, 5 and 6 September

***All images below are compiled from the best 10% of frames from 1000-frame 16-bit SER files stacked with Autostakkert!2, Registax 6 for wavelets, and GIMP for JPG conversion for posting. The links below the images are to the full-res TIFF on Flickr. The imaging cam in all instances was my ZWO ASI294MC Pro, the scope was my Stellarvue SV102T, the mount was my Celestron AVX. :)

Grabbed a singular lunar capture last night (4 September) with the Optolong l-eNhance filter in place. My prior lunar captures during this cycle have utilized the filter, so in an effort of consistency...

Not especially pleased with that one. The highlights are too lit giving it a bit of a crunchy appearance, at least to my eye on my monitor. After that, I set up for deep-sky and ran off 60 3-minute frames of NGC 7635. Got happy self to bed at 0200 hrs. and back up at 0600. Bleh.

Interesting day. We had a sort of hobby fair at work along with a sports-themed tailgating party. Grilled burgers and hot dogs. For the hobby portion, the goal was for employees (at least, those that signed up) to set up a booth and display/discuss a hobby. Mine, of course, was astronomy.

The event was scheduled to begin at 1030 hrs. At 0945, I drove home (I live about 3 minutes away) and loaded up the full imaging rig (SV102T, AVX, cables, cams, etc.) along with my 12" Apertura dobsonian, Twilight II mount, and ES AR127 and ES AR102L refractors. Four scopes, two mounts, and a dob. I'm a glutton for punishment.

Anyway, I got back to work and was directed to a parking spot. At first, the organizer wanted me to set up at an indoor space fearing that it would not be good for my gear to be set up in grass () but I assured him that it would be ok as it was typically set up in just such a place. Besides, I didn't feel like toting all that mess through a bunch of doorways and up a short flight of stairs.

I set up star party style by opening the back of my Chevy Equinox and arranging the scopes in a semi-circle around the back of my vehicle. I also brought two eyepiece cases and my Interstellarum atlas and two binoculars (a 10x50 and 11x70), all for show and tell.

In addition to my display, a couple of people were showing off their very nice hot rods, there was model rocketry, bird dogs, para-sailing, roller derby (who does that?), gardening, crafting, fishing, camping, and a couple of others that I do not recall. As for the tailgating, we seem to be inundated with Pittsburgh Steelers fans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals fans. I thought about wearing my St. Louis Cardinals shirt, but I didn't feel like smack-talking with the other people.

I didn't get a lot of traffic at my display but did get a few folks over who asked great questions, and a few more that had little department store scopes. One guy has an old 70mm Celestron refractor that is somehow broken and he asked if I could fix it. I said sure, bring it up and I'll have a look at it.

And of course, there is always that one guy who doesn't know much of anything really but did see the Moon once with his little so he's gonna stand there and talk loud and expertly (and incorrectly) answer questions asked. He finally went away.

I did that for 2 hours and then realized the flaw in my plan of setting up outdoors. I pretty much got roasted. I don't really tan, I just sort of burst into flame. When I finally got back inside to attend a meeting at 1300 hrs., some people thought I was mad and about to blow a gasket because my face was all red.

Got home and got all that stuff unloaded and put away. I did park the AVX in its usual spot in the yard with the SV mounted. Thought I'd goof around on the Moon and try a few things out. I wanted to build a lunar mosaic using the ASI294MC. I usually do mosaics with the ASI174MC.

The sky was still blue when I got started, though the Sun was well into the western and beginning it's decent. I ran off a thousand frames, waiting a bit, and fired off 1000 more (sans filter).

Link to full-res:
20190906 19_40_19_g4_ap108.jpg

After those were done, I added a 2x barlow in front of the cam (I had the 1.25" nose piece installed). With the ASI174MC, it takes three panels to cover a quarter Moon. With the ASI294MC, it takes only two panels.

Since I was in the mood, I grabbed my ES 3x focal extender and swapped out the 2x barlow. This time I did need three panels.

After that, I reconfigured the works for deep sky and added my l-eNhance filter to the mix. And again, in an effort of consistency, I ran off another full-disk at the same resolution of my prior day captures.
20190906 20_06_26_g4_ap97.jpg

So there you go, more cowbell.

After that, I fired over to the eastern portion of IC 1318 and kicked off a sequence of 3-minute exposures. It's nasty, hot, and humid out and the sky is pretty soupy, so I'm not expecting too much out of that. :)

That 3x stitch full res image is excellent! Perfect light balance and the details at the terminator are really impressive!

They are all very nice, but that one is special.

That fine work after a roasting. Wow!

Thanks ,
Jim

Awesome work, Bryan! That 3x barlow mosaic is so good that my head is still spinning.

I don't do "organized fun", but enjoyed your description of the event. Thanks for taking the time to share.

I'm not too sure how I missed this Bryan, but obviously I did.

Great read; your description of the hobby fair was hilarious! Yeah, roller derby..... seriously? Well, to each their own.
I have to say, your patience impresses me!

Very nice pics as well! I agree with the others; the one through your 3X barlow is just awesome. Wow. Not to take away from the others, but it does stand out.

I'm trying the same thing as well, consistency  My goal is to get the various phases, starting with waxing at 12% or so illuminated, and finishing with waning at the same phase. According to Stellarium and my poor math, the lunar phase seems to advance by 11-13% illumination each night. This might take a while to get a complete run of 28 days as the moon is in different areas of the sky as well as times of day/night for it to appear.

Anyways, nicely done and I shall leave you be. All this typing makes me want more coffee :D

Have a good day!
Mark

"The Hankmeister" Celestron 8SE, orange tube Vixen made C80, CG4 & AZ-EQ5 mounts.
Too much Towa glass/mirrors.

H/A - PST stage 2 mod with a Baader 90mm ERF on a Celestron XLT 102 (thanks Mike!)
Ca-K - W/O 61mm, Antares 1.6 barlow, Baader 3.8 OD and Ca-K filters with a ZWO ASI174mm.
W/L - C80-HD with Baader 5.0 & 3.8 Solar film, Solar Continuum 7.5nm and UV/IR filters with a Canon EOS 550D.

Oh yeah, and Solar Cycle 25 :D

Thanks, Mark!

I have caught 6 days of lunar images in a row over this past week. Tonight is looking iffy, and tomorrow night even iffier. I'll set up, barring rain, of course, though it may take me a while to get a capture done.

I'm wondering if the clouds are engineered by the mosquitoes? The longer I am forced to wait on a sucker hole, the longer they can feast!

PS, I made a much better 3x mosaic the following night (in another thread). :)
