Oh Joy! More Moon! 3 September 2019

#1

Post by bladekeeper »

The mosquitoes brought out the goon squad tonight. Feels like they are shooting bows and arrows at me. And something much larger sputtered past my head. I could feel the wind of its passage. I don't even want to know what that one looks like in the light.

Had a devil of a time trying to get the Moon centered in the frame. I can usually do this quite easily by sighting down the tube. Not so this evening. I tried and tried, slewed all around the Moon, resorted to swapping SharpCap over to the guide cam (it was dead center there), back to the imaging cam, no freakin' Moon.

It is very warm and quite humid, and with the frustration of trying to center the Moon, I was working up a nice sweat.

As a last resort, I thought I might try removing the dust cap from the dew shield. Hey, whatta ya know. That worked like a charm!

Anyway, after that self-inflicted gunshot wound, I was only in the mood to run off one capture. I briefly considered doing a mosaic, but then a squadron of skeeters angled in for an attack and I skedaddled.

Regardless of anything that went wrong, that's a great shot! The mosquitos in Los Angeles apparently think they're in a much more humid climate than they actually are... I've got got two red ankles from scratching and a bite on each hand. So thankful we get West Nile out here :|

Bryan, nicely done! Bummer about the mosquitoes; I still have the battle scars from a few nights ago

"As a last resort, I thought I might try removing the dust cap from the dew shield. Hey, whatta ya know. That worked like a charm!"

Ok, I'm still laughing! Nice to know I'm not the only one who's done/said that!

I'm hoping your forecast is clear again tomorrow. Between this picture, yesterday, and all the others, I see a complete lunar cycle waiting to happen.... ;)

All the best,
Mark

Thanks, man! Yeah, the skeeters have been rough this year. They usually get me on the wrists and hands. Nasty little buggers.

Thanks, Mark! Yeah, I learn from my cat. He'll fall off of something and just start grooming himself like he meant to do that.

That loud/big bug? Well, where I live, an unexpected and loud/deep-toned buzz-by-your-head at night from a cicada can be pretty shocking.

This was more helicopterish. Probably one of those big 6" preying mantis' that look at you with their little alien head swiveling around and that cunning look in their eye as if they care not one iota whether you live or die. Those things will eat your face.

I may have left the dust cap on a time or two over the years myself.
It is really good when you do it when a line of people are waiting to look through the telescope...
