Lunar Crescent, 2 September 2019

Ok, fine. I figured some crap out.

So I have the SV102T configured for DSO imaging and I had my Optolong l-eNhance filter installed on the ASI294MC Pro.

But the Moon was showing. Fine. I swung over to the Moon and achieved focus. It was nicely blue due to the filter. This filter is basically an LP filter that also passes H-alpha, H-beta, and OIII bands.

I adjusted the color balance to achieve a fairly normal appearance to the crescent. And just for giggles, I ran off another capture as it initially appeared filtered.

Had a heck of a time stacking. I've always had trouble stacking crescent frames. I finally realized that I need to increase my alignment point SIZE (not number). Once I figured that out, I can stack crescents all day long. However, now I was experiencing debayering trouble. I finally set AS2 to force RGGB (bayer pattern for the 294) and that worked. This time. I've had this trouble with the output from the ASI174MC a few times.

And I don't have Photoshop on my new laptop. The older laptop is busy in the yard, so I installed GIMP on the new laptop. I finally resorted to exporting the images as JPGs and that reduced the image size considerably so that I can upload them to the forum. Hopefully they still look ok. I was doing 24 bit PNGs with Photoshop.

Anyway, here is my sky trash for all to enjoy.

Hi Bryan,

Those images look more like treasure than sky trash.

I really like the first image with neutral coloration. It gives me a neat feeling of the cold solitude of our neighbor.

You're stacking insights are much appreciated. I was also interested in your comment about adjusting the image color to reduce the blue tent from the filter. I was unaware that this could be done while capturing the image without losing the benefit.

Following along with my efforts must be like watching a monkey wrestle a garden hose.

It's been fun. I don't find it as peaceful or relaxing as visual, but it has a different sort of satisfaction to it, I reckon.
