99% Illuminated Moon last night.

Post by Dyno05 »

Since I knew it would be raining today, I went out last night to get a basically “full” Moon photo. I haven’t really done a nice one before. I used my trusty C5 for this with a 294mc pro. I shot about 165 frames in a few seconds and stacked the best 66. The C8 or C9.25 would have better resolution, but the focal length is too great for the Micro 4/3 sensor size, Unless I used a focal reducer. Plus, the C5 on an 8se mount without a tripod is the Perfect portable setup for a quick shot like this. As always, Thanks for looking.
Stacked with Autostakkert
Color, levels and sharpening with Pixinsight
Final tad of sharpening with RS6

Thank you! What I did was use a fairly low gain so I could maximize the pixel well depth. I was also shooting exposures with a max histogram of 70%, making sure to not clip any highlights and maintain a wide dynamic range. I’m pretty happy with the results.

Very nice shot. We don't see many 90+% illuminated moon shots.

This lunar image has a fine finish dyno.
You have brought up the color and established a very pleasingly uniform contrast and focus across the view.

Maybe the C8 would give more resolution, but the C5 has done a fine job. And your stacking process looks perfect.

I would recommend an APOD for this one. 👍

Hi Dana. A very nice almost full moon image. These are tough to achieve as the bright light tends to "bloom" out the details. However, you have excellent contrast, surface details, and ejecta rays in your capture. Thanks for sharing this with us on here Dana and keep up the great work.

Very nice image Dana, wow! Great contrast. colour, and detail, and that's (for me) really hard to pull off with a full-ish Moon. Another Mark votes that for an APOD! :D

And I never would have thought of stacking lunar images with DSS; I'll have to look into that, thanks for the info!

All the best,
Mark

All the best,
Whoopsie! That was a typo. Thanks for pointing it out. I stacked the shots with Autostakkert.
