97% Lunar Eclipse November 2021

I checked the moon at 1am and saw slight clouds, but I could also see the start of the eclipse. So I stayed up and checked again at 2:15am, and saw it was clear. I had a great view of the event from my driveway. So, I setup my Sony A7 with my Sigma 150-600mm lens and tried imaging at 600mm. I had to use ISO 2500 and take 1/20 second images to get anything decent. I found focusing the eclipsed part of the moon difficult.

I waited until the maximum eclipse near 3am and got this image. It is a stack of 6 images using Sequator of all things! Sequator is intended for star fields, but it didn't complain when I did the stack. It also accepts the native RAW images from a Sony Camera.

I found processing sort of tricky, but I was happy with the result. It appears you can see the boundaries of the Umbra and Penumbra.

Thanks everyone! Actually this image was closer to what I thought I saw live. I didn't think I saw the really red color you see in some images - though those are great as well

Well this was not expected... The November 2021 Astronomy Magazine has a great article on the Lunar Eclipse of November 2021. The article explains the Danjon scale.

I didn't know about the Danjon scale, but now believe I understand why I was seeing a blueish tinge on the edge of the umbra during the November 19 eclipse as my image shows. I thought there was something wrong with the way I took the image! To make things worse, I mistakenly thought the blueish tinge was the penumbra. Lesson learned!

NOTE: The blueish edge of the Umbra is typical of Lunar Eclipse Danjon Scale = L4 "Very bright, copper-red or orange eclipse. Umbral shadow has a bluish, very bright rim. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danjon_scale
