Clavius

#1

Post by RonGiddy »

Clavius crater is named after the German Jesuit Priest, Astronomer and Mathematician Father Christopher Clavius, who’s contributions to Astronomy influenced Galileo.
Clavius crater is a favourite amongst Luna imagers the world over with a plethora of images available to view in books, magazines, and the internet. The Crater is amongst the largest on the visible side of the Luna surface and one of the oldest and yet very well preserved. An indicator of its longevity is the number of impactors of varying sizes seen within the original crater walls. In October 2020 NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) detected the presents of H2O, Don’t get excited, apparently the Sahara Desert contains more than 100 times the amount detected.
In both the film and book versions of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clavius is the site of a lunar settlement known as “Clavius Base”. Almost all of the Base is located beneath the Luna surface. It is here that Dr. Heywood Floyd learns more about the discovery of the alien artifact referred to as TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly 1) at the nearby crater Tycho.
Seen top centre of the image is the 114 km diameter crater Moretus, an exceptional example of a beautifully formed complex crater with its layered terraced walls, central peak and random craterlets all clearly visible.

As a lunartic myself, I really enjoyed viewing this capture and reading your well written report.
