Some cheese, pumpkins and cranberries

#1

Post by Thefatkitty »

Hey everyone, hope all is good :D

You are probably wondering what cheese, pumpkins and cranberries have to do with a thread posted under the Lunar Images forum. Well, you'll just have to read on. And no, it's not a recipe for Moon Pie or the like... ;)

Yesterday (Saturday) started off rather dreary. I rained lightly in the morning, and changed to wind and more clouds just after lunch. Not the warmest of days, but I went out and made/welded some handles for the addition to my tire rim BBQ/stove. It's a 15" spare rim I found. I thought to use it as a "cover" for the stove, as it just has the hole for the hub and wheel studs; no brake cooling holes, and it's thinner along the width as well. And as I found out, it really helps make it hotter inside the stove. The heat that it radiates is just wonderful...
However, it sitting on top of the two other rims with the handles; all I can see is a fat Tie-fighter

I started a fire at 4PM. About an hour later the winds died down and the clouds started to dissipate, though there was still a fair amount of haze. 6PM found me BBQ'ing a few steaks to go with the salad and rice my better half had made. It was warmer out now too.

After the three of us ate, I went back outside and stoked up the fire. My wife was chilling on the couch, and Sarah was upstairs in her room. As the fire was roaring away, the cat came out and laid down a few feet from the fire. Well, time for some tunes and a beer.

Sarah and I like a variety of music, but we both really like alt/grunge for whatever reason. No generation gap there; or with much else either. Even though there's that age gap and I'm her father, I "get it" as she puts it. Yeah, I do kiddo; been there, done that, closet full of T-shirts...

And this is where the pumpkins and cranberries part comes in, as in the Smashing Pumpkins and The Cranberries. Everything from Ava Adore to Zombie. I didn't have it too loud, but Sarah had her window open a bit, so between the music and the smell of the maple and hickory burning, it wasn't long until she came outside.

We talked about life or the lack of these days. She's been at home doing the on-line schooling. My wife teaches from home as well. Not much going on, but somehow we talked about that for the better part of three hours, from 8 till just after 11PM. We burned over a milk crate full of wood, and even Sasha the cat stayed out the whole time.

At 8:30 we both noticed the Moon in the dark blue sky. The Sun had set some time ago, and even Mars was peeking in and out to the right and below of ol' Luna. Since my C80-HD was right inside the back door with my Canon 550D already in it, I thought to take some pics. I had Sarah make sure the focus was on (the joy of having extra and better eyeballs) and took some shots. I used ISO 800 with 1/160th to 1/400 sec exposures. This morning I aligned the 45 shots in PIPP and stacked 66% with AS3.

This is the cheese part of the thread title. It wasn't completely dark out, and I've found with an achro it seems to bring out that cheesy glow more than when it's totally dark. I used the Photoshop camera raw filter, in which I could have gotten rid of most of the said cheese.

I tried that, and it really seemed to ruin it. Maybe it's my affinity for long f/l achro's, and the resulting false color. So here is the Moon in all its cheesy glory:

After taking those shots, Sarah and I talked, took turns petting the cat, fed the fire; and all the while the haze became more apparent as it got darker. I did try for some more pics at about 10:40. Same camera settings as above, but not as much cheesy glory :(

After 11 we were both feeling the effects of the heat and staring into the flames. It's mesmerizing and almost wearing at the same time. Makes for a good sleep, though! I hadn't put any wood in the stove for an hour; but I made sure there was nothing left to burn in it. Glowing embers were all that were left.

Sarah and I went in, and the cat followed about a minute later. My wife was asleep on the couch, and the daddy/daughter duo went upstairs to their respective bedrooms and passed out. As for the cat, we will never know...

Thanks for reading my drivel and all the best!
