It was "alarming" in that it woke me up. At 05:45 local, within a minute or two of maximum eclipse, the moonlight shone in through my bedroom window, into my eyes and woke me up. I looked at my clock, thought, "Oh, yeah, maximum eclipse", looked out at the Moon, thought, "Oh, yeah, the top part is dimmer", pulled the covers over my head, and went back to sleep.

My response to early morning penumbral eclipses is similar to yours. On the other side of the pond, this eclipse was at a much more civilised hour. In progress at sunset/moonrise, maximum eclipse was at the end of astronomical twilight, all done by 10pm. So I had a go.
