Moon Question

#1

Post by Bearcatrp »

Took this photo this morning. Noticed this spot that seems whiter than normal compared to other spots that seem dull. Almost looks like a fresh hit of some kind. But it is whiter, to me anyways. Ideas on this? Its center on the photo.

You see many craters that appear this way.
Probably the angle of the light reflecting from it.
Eyeballs, binoculars, sketch box, Scopes n stuff.
Some people don't understand why I love astronomy so much, I cannot understand why they do not!

That is the crater Aristarchus considered one of the brightest features on the moon. It's probably "fresh" by lunar standards. Higher magnification will show a channel running by it. Interesting area all round.
BTW, just to note that the image is flipped L-R which could confuse some people.

Wikipedia's entry on Aristarchus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristarchus_(crater)

Bonus: If you go down and to the right in your picture, you come across another high albedo feature that is even more mysterious -- the lunar swirl Reiner Gamma: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiner_Gamma
telescopes: XT6 and XT12 Dobsonians
binoculars: 15x70

Thanks for the replies. I see the channel. Think your right on the angle causing the brightness. My 8.8 super wide lens showed it very well. The pic above I was using a 10mm lens. Have to start looking at options for taking better photos. Cell phone isn't cutting it.
