3-Panel Lunar, 30 May 2020

Post by bladekeeper »

Finally caught a clear one. Actually, last night was clear, but you know, 14-hour workdays...

Anyway, last time out with a scope was on 5 March before the zombie apocalypse broke out. Not only have the skies been incessantly cloudy, working from 0800 to 2200 hours every day isn't especially conducive to getting a telescope out. Just too exhausted.

Tonight though, a clear though moony sky corresponding with a Saturday (only 5 hours of work today).

Started the evening off cooking some hillbilly cheeseburgers. I say hillbilly because I enjoy a burger best when seared in an iron skillet, but that tends to grease up the house something fierce, so I cobbled up a hillbilly setup with an electric burner on a folding table in the backyard. I looked like a durn redneck out there frying meat in a skillet, but by golly, they were pretty darn good.

We ate those with a side of potato chips and some nice French onion dip. My wife said, "You always get too much dip."

"Yeah," I replied, "I have poor dipth perception." :D

After that mess was cleaned up, I set the AVX out in the usual spot. Unfortunately, I had some trouble finding my polar alignment divots. I found the "north" divot, but a mole had tunneled through the "west" divot. Finally found the "east" one and plunked the mount down. First-world problems...

Surprisingly, I remembered how to saddle the scope, the right extensions for the cam, and whatnot. Fired up SharpCap, acquired my target, and ran off a full-frame disk image. Satisfied with that, I added in the 2× barlow, re-focused, and captured the three panels for my mosaic. Back inside, I cranked those through AutoStakkert and Registax. After a crank through MS ICE, this is what I came up with.

Not too bad for being way out of practice.

Scope: Stellarvue SV102T
Mount: Celestron AVX
Cam: ZWO ASI174MC
Software: SharpCap, AutoStakkert, Registax, MS ICE

Yeah, I forgot your camera died. That sucks big time.

I should probably still be sitting out there observing, but lately it just feels better to sit quietly in the dark and listen to the crackle and pop of the cosmic microwave background as my brain trickles out of my ears.

Sarah just came down as she was in the kitchen and heard me laughing... Showed her your response and she said "wow, Bryan sounds like you and me on a good day lately" Probably like most of us...
As for the camera, I have two of them. One I bought and one my brother in law gave me. His died; won't power on. Mine powers on but the sensor is shot... I've got nothing to lose on trying this one ;)

Have a good night,
Mark

Brilliant image Bryan.

And inspiring too. I'm going to copy your process and have another go tonight! (If the wind drops)

Good to see you find a good slot to get back on it. Don't burn yourself out.

Glad the skies finally cleared-up for you!

Nice image.

The moles...don't even get me started! I have one area (where I normally setup) that had tunnels so bad, the ground started collapsing in(along with both ankles) and it looks like a geographic fault line. They tunneled right beneath one of the legs on the the 10" Meade last fall (and brought it out of polar alignment). They just seem to love my lawn. Gonna need a bucket or two of dirt me thinks.

Yeah, the moles are pretty bad in my yard as well. I need to look into some mitigation measures. :)

And, I enjoyed the hillbilly cooking report too. Thanks for sharing this work with us Bryan, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award today.

Beautiful image Bryan!

Been a while and I have missed not seeing your lunar images.

You certainly haven’t lost your touch at all. Very crisp, sharp, and detailed as if you never stopped.

I know that it felt good to get out again. Pulled in an apod on your first image in months. Way to go!
