IC405 Flaming Star Nebula

#1

Post by korbitz »

So decided to go out last night hoping for some clear skies to troubleshoot my guide cam, still not fixed, lots of noise and grain in PHD2, i suspect a focus issue, will spend some time on this today during daylight.

As i was getting nowhere with the guide cam decided (as the skies were clearing) to take slightly longer exposures on IC405, first nebula i came across on stellerium.

Only managed to get 15 3m subs, would have got more but lost alot to trailing while working on PHD2 and some at random. No darks/flats have been taken as this was a test capture and once i get the guide cam to work will spend some more time on this object.

Could have also planned the image better, had the space to get the other nebula into the image also, not easy when you cant see the nebulosity in APT.

Still a fair amount of trailing in the final image, but even a poor image is better that no image.

Good shot despite the guiding issues and lack of calibration frames.

I hope that you get the issues worked out soon.

If you can expose a test shot (using the Shoot button) bright enough to see the nebulosity, you can use the GOTO++ “Aim” to center the image where you want it.

Thanks
Jim

Quick update, got the focus during the day so i know the guide cam is fine, managed to get close focus tonight on some stars but clouds kept coming along and the star would be lost, but hopefull on a clear night i can finally get the guiding working and get some longer exposures

Hello David. Despite the technical problems and the short exposures, you still came away with a nice IC405 Flaming Star Nebula image. Lots of stars in the field and you caught some nice red emission nebulosity too. Thanks for sharing your capture on here David, and I hope to see more of your work on here again soon.
