NGC 3576 (HOO) - Princess Leia Nebula, or more commonly The Statue of Liberty

Clouds, clouds, clouds... it’s been constant in Brisbane, Australia. However, Feb 29th proved lucky. I managed some extra time on SH2-308 (Dolphin) and started on NGC 3576. Only have an hour of Ha and an hour of OIII (20x180s). Taken with an 8” f4 Quattro Carbon Fibre Newtonian and a ZWO ASI1600MM-Pro.

Thanks for the nice comments and iotd. It’s very much a Southern Hemisphere object I guess and close to Eta Carina and the wonders in and around there. Seems very rich in Ha and OIII and I certainly didn’t expect much to arise from the small amount of time on it. The HOO combo is surprisingly flexible with colour, although it would be nice to add some SII and really go to town :-) Hoping the clouds clear on a night I’m free to image again. Clear skies to all.

Very well done Benjamin and congrats on the APOD. A stunning image of an object that one doesn't see mentioned very often.

I was fortunate to be able to pick this one up visually in my ED80 during a business trip just south of the equator about four years ago. Though my Interstellrum atlas indicated it was not visible even with a 12 inch scope, my ED80 pulled it through in conjunction with a narrow-band nebula filter. I was in a suburban area, but on a night of exceptional transparency for that location. It was subtle mind you, but clearly observed as a dim rounded haze. The eastern portion in your image was also viewed as an even dimmer elongated glow. This is the nebula/star cluster complex identified as NGC 3603.
