Boogeyman Reprocess - HaRGB

#1

Post by STEVE333 »

Well I spent most of today creating calibration frames for my new ASI1600MM Pro cooled mono camera. I only included the Si, Ha, Oiii filters for now along with 300 sec Darks. This NB processing requires a lot of folders! However, everything appears to be working well.

I combined the new (and now calibrated) Ha data with my previous DSLR color data (taken at near full moon). Wow, it really makes a difference. I used the LRGBCombination script which is a wonder. Still much to learn about NB imaging and processing, but, this is my first attempt and it was a big improvement over the DSLR image with much more structure evident. Had to crop quite a bit of the combined image because of poor overlap of the RGB and Ha images.

I'm starting to really like this new camera setup :happy-wavemulticolor: .

Very impressive Steve!

You have really picked up on the new equipment quickly! I know that you have lots more to learn, but you are getting good results right out of the box.

I’ll bet that there is a big difference in sensitivity.

I really just got started with a modified dslr and will be using it for awhile, but hopefully one day I can make the move to a dedicated astrocam. If only for the darks! It is a real bummer to collect darks after a session.

Good for you! A very nice image!

Hey Steve, VERY NICE!! There's a great resource, that you probably already know about, but I thought I'd mention it to you anyway. Light Vortex Astronomy, on the web, has about anything you would want to know about LRGB and NB processing....check it out!

Couldn't resist playing with the data a bit more. Not a big change, but, a little cleaner I think.

Looking forward to working with good data.

i like the first image because it shows the fainter stuff even though it has more noise, typically i like the faint wispy stuff over lower noise with better contrast images. even though for quality wise the repro is better but the original has more to look at.

Looks great Steve, you're going to love working with data from an astro camera I predict :)
I got the Altair Hypercam version with this sensor last October, along with a widefield scope (336m/f4.8), but the weather has been so terrible this winter that I've still not had the clear sky to dial it all in and get my first image!
Looking forward to seeing some great images from you.

Hi Richard - Thanks.

So far I like what I'm seeing in the images. Still a "baby" at the processing side of NB, but, the quality of the data definitely looks superior which should make processing easier (other than all the folders and filters).

Our widefield scopes have almost identical FL and F#. I've really enjoyed the WFOV views.

I'm hoping to get some RGB data tonight for the first time. I've been told that binning the RGB is the way to go because all the detail is in either the Lum (or Ha if using that as the Lum). So, I'll be trying 2x2 binning. Not sure what exposure to use either, so, a bit of experimenting tonight.

Hopefully your weather will change for the better soon. I miss seeing your images, and, more importantly, I'm sure you want to try out your new gear! :angry-tappingfoot:

Cheers,
Steve

Congratulations on the apod Steve!

Your combined dslr/astrocam image is really nice. Looks like you are off to a new level of imaging.

You are one of the top dslr imagers here on TSS. Now that you have moved to the ASI1600MM, I hope that you wouldn't mind an occasional question. You posses a huge database of dslr astro imaging knowledge!
