NGC7013 Galaxy Peeking Out From Below Milky Way Clouds

#1

Post by jthommes »

Here is a quick image of the galaxy NGC 7013 peeking out from below Milky Way Clouds. NGC 7013 is about 41.1 million light years distant (49 million light years by redshift estimate) It is a ring galaxy classified SA0/a(r). The Milky Way clouds are molecular clouds.

The processing of the low surface brightness parts of the cloud and galaxy were processed in a starless mode. Stars are a low stretch of LRGB data. The stars and low surface brightness images were combined using pixel math.

This data was captured last year in August. This region is near the Veil complex in Cygnus which is about 2.5 degrees to the northwest of NGC 7013.

The thumbnails images below show a full field image as well as a crop of the galaxy itself. Larger images and details are accessed from the link below (or by clicking on either thumbnail). The annotated image can be linked from the main image page but I have also provided a link below for convenience. The full resolution image (0.81 arcsec/pix) can be accessed from the image webpage.

Wonderful image Jim, with marvelous detail

I had the opportunity to observe this galaxy in July of last year from our dark site house with the 17.5 inch. Below are my notes from that observation. Of course I did not see it in quite the detail that your image captures, nor the subtle presence of the nearby molecular clouds. Well done!

NGC 7013 (Cygnus, lenticular galaxy, mag=11.3, size=4.0’x1.4’, SBr=13.1):

Using 110x I nailed down this somewhat large and bright oval glow just over 2° WSW of Zeta Cygni nudged up against a mag 9.3 field star off its northern tip. It displayed a brighter central lens elongated in the major axis with a stellar core pinned to its heart. At both 198x and 283x it was very obvious in the field, clearly dominating the field of view

Very pretty Jim. I love the soft "clouds" in the background. Nice job of reintroducing the stars too.

Cheers,

Congrats on winning today's award Jim for your fine effort. It's hard to pull galaxies out of star fields visually so I am glad that you were able to photographically.

Hi Jim. An excellent capture of NGC 7013 in Cygnus. You did a great job of capturing this galaxy and the outer mass, as well as integrating the surrounding stars. And, the annotated version with the nearby companions was appreciated. Thanks for sharing this view on here Jim, congratulations on winning the APOD, and keep up the great work.

Alan, Thanks for the comment and thanks for your notes on your visual observation. It must be pretty cool to make such an observation real time. I never had equipment or a good dark site to do much with visual observation (although I did start my astronomy interests with visual astronomy as many other astronomers do as well). I could never get a view of a galaxy such as NGC 7013 much more than a "fuzzy star". So that drove me to long integration with CCD sensors. It would be neat to get a chance to do visual work with some really capable equipment.
Clear Skies!
