M33 - This year's version

#1

Post by lazjen »

Hi everyone, might as well open my innings here with an image:
M33_Small.jpg
Larger version is here: https://youpic.com/image/16233161/m33-t ... chris-ryan

I took this over 2 nights back in October and I had been holding off processing in the hopes of getting more data to add to it. But that's not to be.

M33 is not in a good position for me in the north of the sky. At best it gets to approx 30 degrees above the horizon. Makes it a challenge to get any useful data.

The combined 2 nights data consists of 300 sec exposures: L 22 (110 min), R 20 (100 min), G 19 (95 min), B 18 images (90 min). I'm missing a lot of fainter detail in the outer arms of the galaxy with this limited amount of data. My initial aim was to go for about 3 times the amount I got to help improve that fainter detail.

I also had trouble trying to use the PhotometricColourCalibration process to work on the image - no matter what I tried it would not do the plate solve part. So, this one is me just manually adjusting the curves, etc.

Anyway, enjoy. Feedback, etc welcome.

Nicely timed through the covers for 4! Amazing image given its position here in the Southern Hemisphere. Heaps of detail coming through and lovely coloured stars.

Thanks Jim and Benjamin (I think I'm about 100km north of you).

Yep, I’m in Brisbane (7km south of the city centre). Anything to my north gets bathed in city sky glow. How are the skies on the Sunshine Coast? Much smoke haze?

There has been a lot of smoke haze, but overall I believe Brisbane has copped it a lot more than we have. I moved away from Brisbane a bit over a year ago and the Sunshine Coast was the compromise spot as I still need to go to the office in the city sometimes.

But the :observatory: is up again and mostly functional, and the skies are a lot darker than suburban Brisbane.
