NGC 891

Finally some clearish skies, enough time to try out my new Aluma 694/ FW8Ga/AO-8a. NGC 891 A nice edge on galaxy, with a cool dust lane. Just 4x180s ea Lrgb, processed Pixinsight. Meade LX-600 ota F8.

Yes, happy with the new camera, very low noise and good sensitivity. I was in a race against the clouds and I want to assemble something so this is what I was able to pull off in the allotted time.

So to be clear it was 12 min each filter, still not much. I was racing the incoming clouds to get something that I could assemble to see my first image with the camera, ended up being pretty decent. Fairly dark here, bortle 3-4. I took the subs just last Sunday evening the moon was up when I was imaging. Sure, Steve; lets see a starless version.

To be clear, I create a starless version, do some enhancement of the starless version, then reinsert the stars.

Your image had some bloated stars (I get lots of those with my present setup) so I've devised a processing approach specifically to help reduce the bloat on the brighter stars. The result of all my playing around is below. I've included your original and the redo. Hope you enjoy it.

Himmm..to be clear the original xisf version has a darker background which is easily manipulated in Pixinsight, the png as seen is stretched larger that brightens the background. I might try to darken the background a bit more than I like and see what it looks like when converting to a png file.

Once I had the starless version I used LocalHistogramEqualiztion with a Kernel Radius of 26 to sharpen the galaxy. After recombining with the stars I used a technique called Surface Blur Noise Reduction to help reduce the background noise. This led to the darker background.
