This was abit of a trial to see how the L-ultimate performs with the Samyang 135mm

I ran a session on Tuesday night with the moon at 100% but there were some nasty reflections/gradients that I could not process out. I'm thinking that the moon was just too bright, too close and shining in over the top of the lens sheild. Also I had it almost full open. So Wednesday night I added a bit more of a shield, stopped down with rings to f4 and tried again. As it happened mist rolled in early meaning I ended up with only 3 hrs of data.

But I think as "proof of concept" its probably worked out ok

Sure looks like success David!
That sure is an enormous field with the 2600!

I have yet to even play with my Samyang except for regular photography. Too many home/family things going on and I am working on some guiding issues.

You must have been very close to the moon! Do you feel that the extra shielding did the trick, stopping down to F4, or a combination of the two?

Great image by the way!

Thanks Jim, yes I love the widefields that come out of this combination. And its just so forgiving for guiding etc. I have it piggybacked on the LX200 and wedge at the moment and its just no problem. And that set up means no meridian flip either!

It was pretty close to the moon alright, but that was a little deliberate to see how the 3nm L-ultimate copes with the moon. I'm not 100% sure what did the trick. The scientist in me abhors changing more than one thing at a time but with clear nights as scarce as they are sometimes its not possible to follow "the scientific method" :icon-smile: But I rather suspect that the shield did it rather than the stop down. I do hope so because it a shame to have to give up 2 f stops. Part of the beauty of the Sammy is its speed.

Thanks again Jim,

take care

David.

Wow David!! I would call that an unmitigated success! The WFOV of this area is something I haven't seen before. Quite honestly I wasn't even aware of the Clamshell nebula. My partner, Carole, was quite impressed with the beautiful composition of this image as was I. Really nice work.

That is incredible considering the sky conditions you had to work with. I never would have dreamed of attempting a wide-field shot like that with so much moonlight nearby.

Congratulations on the APOD David, a worthy winner.

Good to see all that's going on around the North America Nebula region in a wide angle image.

That is a beautiful image, David.
I've always been aware of how huge it is and having the Pelican as a next door neighbor to it but I was completely unaware of that huge "Rosette-Like" nebula off to the left in your image. That region deserves its own closeup. Making notes for next season to shoot that area!

Thanks for that.

Yes its a fabulous area of the sky and the little 135mm shows big chunks in context.
The clamshell is a bit overwhelmed in this image but it does respond well to longer fl and SHO treatment.
