There is an IR spectrum open cluster, Majaess 29, in the region of LDN 1340A and is mostly obscured by the dusty interstellar medium of LDN 1340A. Its distance is 3,016 light years (by parallax estimate). This suggests that the LDN 1340A cloud must be closer in distance in order to obscure the cluster and thus provides a general distance frame of reference.
Interestingly, the image shows some background galaxies (through all that dust). Several of these galaxies can be seen through the dusty interstellar matter (though somewhat obscurely). The galaxy, ZOAG G130.51+12.27, has a distance of 1.265 billion light years - others have no distance estimate. These galaxies can be seen only in the full size image.
