NGC 7293 and Milky Way Time Lapse from La Palma

#1

Post by bernhardhubl »

Hello astrophotographers,

Today I would like to present three more results from our one-week stay (CEDIC-Team) at Athos (La Palma) in July.

The following image of the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) was created by combining luminance data captured with the AP175 during our stay this year with RGB data (Baader Apo95 + Nikon D810A) from Christoph Kaltseis obtained during an earlier astro journey of the CEDIC team in July 2017.

Furthermore I made two time lapse videos. Both time lapses show the summer milky way moving over the southern horizon. At the end of the first video the sky is brightened by the rising moon. The second video shows a very dramatic mood in a stormy night.

Your image of the Helix Nebula is superb. This has been one of the hardest DSOs for me to image (other than those that are fainter than magnitude 14, of course! Unfortunately at 40 degrees 11 minutes latitude, the Helix Nebula sits very low on our horizon here in central Illinois and it would take a rare, very dark and transparent sky (hopefully under good seeing conditions, too) at my south Fairmont, IL "dark-site" to tease the Helix out of the natural skyglow to the south. Fortunately there are no large communities directly south of the south Fairmont location like there is with our Penfield/Middlefork dark-site (which is now an officially recognized dark-site, btw) which has an urban light dome intruding about 15 degrees into the sky to the south-south-west because of Rantoul, IL, but given the general sky conditions and the natural skyglow which hovers about five to eight degrees above the horizon at all four points of the compass, trying to tease out the Helix Nebula from the background fog would be a real accomplishment for central Illinois astro-photographers, though I'm sure it's been done hundreds of times. I think I might have to breakdown and use a nebula filter of some kind. Any suggestions?
