Re-processed Image: M101

#1

Post by MariusD69 »

Hello!

This is the reprocess of last year's capture for M101 (HaLRGB). I worked on it for several days, restarting the processing from different stages (I usually save each step, until I reach the final image/images). Or I didn't like the colors, or the details in the center, or the outer arms were not visible well, or it didn't have enough brightness, or the saturation was weak. So, the final image can probably be done even better.
I went all the way with both combinations: the LRGB version (predominantly blue arms, but the areas with a more intense Ha could also be seen well), as well as the HaLRGB version (here there were several versions, with different Ha amplification percentages) which had almost no blue. The final picture is a mixture of 80% LRGB with 20% HaLRGB.
For comparison, I'll post also the old version. Honestly, I don't know why I liked it then, but this happens many times to me when I look at my older pictures.
Total exposure: 17 hours and 45 minutes(60x2m R, 40x2m B, 40x2m G, 65x5m Ha, 230x2m L).
Clear skies!

A super job on this popular target but rarely see ones as good as this one.
Thanks.

Hi Marius,

Both are very nice, but your latest repro has better details and I like the colors better.
This target is a very difficult one for me to process. I’ve gone down many different avenues and never got the right “look” as you have.
The Ha areas look in the newer version really sparkles!
Nice work sir!

Hello Marius. I like both versions but your re-process work paid off with a splendid new version of M101 (Pinwheel Galaxy and NGC 5457). Beautiful sparkly spiral arms details and nebulosity color. This redo is definitely a winner Marius and thanks for sharing this with us on here.

Both of those are really nice, I probably prefer the new version better.

I am with Jim @Juno16 in finding M101 to be really difficult to get a satisfactory result on. I dont know why but i am always disappointment with my output.
