NGC7822/Sh2-171 - WIP

This is now about ~50 x 7 min frames of Ha, O3, and S2 with a lot of frames plagued by clouds (about 20-30 total but PI scooped them in anyway). I think the core region is decent enough but I was trying to get the whole widefield and although sometimes it feels like the data is there, it is also elusive. I am thinking of redoing the registration with a linear fit (frame adaptation) to one of the better/darker Ha frames to start with and perhaps discard all the frames with the clouds.

The problem is that the core region which is okay is one I was planning to repeat with my FC100 anyway. Besides the image scale of the SV70T is a bit soft - it works for widefield targets. So I could continue to go deeper here in Ha, or on all three filters but it's really the outer loop I'm trying to capture in more detail and some of it is I think Ha and some of it is O3. I could also try for a higher gain (this was at low gain to capture more of the dynamic range which worked nicely for the elephant's trunk) and then do a HDR integration.

Here're a couple of versions. Unlike previous NB images of mine where I'd do the HP tweaks in PS, I decided to stick to PI only. So just combination of the three channels and then SCNR to merge the green with the red and blue.

Well, I've been working on this steadily, with some good nights and not so good ones but a total of 58 hours of data for the three filters has been collected and I am looking at another 10-12 more if possible. I do think I have enough for now but I want to try a different exposure length/gain and combine it with the one I think that gives greater dynamic range. But in the mean time, here're the Ha only images with ~18 hours of data (155 x 7). What's interesting is that the more data I kept adding, the more the image became "clear". You may say "duh!" but I mean it got darker and parts that I thought were nebulosity became darker (I guess the what happened is that the contrast got better). In another thread in the Image Processing subforum, about how to determine the final image quality, I've posted previous versions of this but I thought I'd update this thread from now on instead until I finish the image. Images resized to 20% for upload to the forum.

Awesome image(s) Ram!

My images maybe have a collective sum of 90-150 minutes total with a dslr! Different class of image for sure.

Outstanding work!

Thanks,
Jim

I like looking at all the Deep Sky images when I login in to the forum. But from time to time, one really grabs my attention -- like this one!

Beautiful.
