M20 -- Ha & S2 only

#1

Post by BABOafrica »

Last June I managed to get some time on this nebula while in Nairobi. I got some Ha and some S2. Far from ideal conditions. Borlte 8 and moon interference. But the skies were clear for two nights. I was hoping to get the O3 subs on the third night but it clouded over and has remained cloudy for 8 straight weeks.

I'll be moving to my dark site for a month next week but I can't take my C8 SCT with me this time. So I decided to process what I have.

C8 SCT on EQ-G with QHY163

Ha = 20 x 120s
O3 = 0
S2 = 40 x 180s

(total time = 2 hrs 40 min)

I did a pallete of HSS. Not sure if that was the right move. I'm still very much a novice at processing narrowband. I used StarTools 8.

I had a hard time dealing with noise. But this still turned out to be my best M20 so far.

I feel your pain about the weather!

Very nice Trifid! The OIII would be nice, but you can only do what you can do. Congratulation on your best M20 to date!

Enjoy your dark site!
Jim

I had a tough time with noise reduction when I was using StarTools too. I found Topaz DeNoise took care of it pretty well. It was worth the purchase IMO. Pixinsight has a script called EZ denoise that works very well too so I just use that now. The Ha turned out really nice. Hope you get to add the Oiii.

Nice image Babo. My daughter is just back from a 3 month stint in rural coastal Mozambique (well south of you I know) and is breaking my heart with her descriptions of the night sky there.

Lovely detail! I would say that your HSS palette was a success.
