NGC 7331 group

#1

Post by Kanadalainen »

Sept 7, 2021 - image processed in May 2022

NGC 7331 is an unbarred spiral galaxy in Pegasus and is somewhat similar in appearance to our own Milky way. In this galaxies the central bulge is rotating in the to the opposite direction compared to the rest of the disk. The core of the galaxy also appears to be slightly off-center, with one side of the disk appearing to extend further away from the core than the other.

NGC 7331 is located about 40 million years away, and its visual group includes a number of more distant galaxies including the unbarred spirals NGC 7335 and 7336, the spiral NGC 7337 and the elliptical NGC 7340. They are backdropping 7331 at distances of 332, 365, 348 and 294 million years, respectively.

The effect reminds me of ducklings struggling to keep up to their Mum.

I was motivated to try imaging this galaxy with the encouragement of my compatriots of my observing group (Kevin G, Ryan and Dave) by trying my C8 Edge without any reducer. Not easy to image at F10 and with the monster focal length, but I spend about an hour at home to gut the 0.7 reducer from the optical train and adjust the back focus correctly, and the MoonLite CHL focuser helped me out with that chore. In this case I simply went with 133 mm of backfocus, which corresponds to the full fl of the scope (native focal length of 2032 mm). I was close, as my onboard Raspberry Pi solved the focal length as 2030 mm.

This image was taken at our farm, about 50 km south of my city. I set up in the lee of a wall of bales (we had a small breeze of 20 km/h NNW) in the middle of our field. Bortle conditions here are about 4, the milky way is clearly visible.

I used 180 second exposures in this case, with a 2600 mc pro camera, organized my tracking and cooling, exposures etc etc..

As usual this was a fun session in the good company of our little band of astro enthusiasts, thanks to Kevin G, Ryan and David for their help (focusing at 2000 mm!!).

Thanks for looking!

Very nice collection of fuzzies! Nice job of bringing out some of the blues and pinks in the spiral arms as well as the details surrounding the core. Lovely image. Verry nice windbreak too!

Very pretty image Ian.

I can’t imagine imagine at 2000mm and the extra issues at that fl.
One big thing for sure though, it surely opens up a pot ful of new targets!

Nice work sir!

Hello Ian. A superb image of the NGC 7331 group. A nice star field (for the long focal length), excellent spiral arms color and details, and a great core. And hey, that's a nice wind break wall too. Thanks for sharing this capture with us on here Ian and congratulations on receiving the TSS APOD Award today.

A beautiful image of an amazing field Ian. The "Deerfield Group" are a nice line of sight grouping as you indicated, dominated by the gorgeous NGC 7331. You did justice to this amazing galaxy indeed. Not only did you capture the four dimmer background galaxies, but you also picked up mag 15.9 LEDA 2051985 the galaxy down in the lower right corner of your field. Well done and very worthy of the APOD. NGC 7331 and the four galaxies to its east are also known affectionately as the "dog and its fleas." :)

FYI, here are my visual observing notes for the Deerfield Group from almost three years ago with the 17.5 inch at our dark site house:

Deerlick Group / Dog and its Fleas:
On a whim I swung up Eta Pegasi (Matar) and turned to chart 28-left, and also detailed chart D-13 in the back of the atlas. It had been a while since I’d observed the so-called Deerlick Group (aka dog and its fleas), and had not done so with the 17.5 inch. Previously from over here with the 10 inch I was only able to pick up two brightest of the fleas, so I wanted to try and pin down those two dim and elusive objects.

NGC 7331 (Pegasus, spiral galaxy, mag=9.5, size=10.5’x3.7’, SBr=13.3):
A true showpiece galaxy, this large and bright tilted spiral was very obvious at 110x, showing a large and bright core. Dark lanes were clearly seen within the arm structure. This one is simply a stunner, particularly from a dark location.

NGC 7335 (Pegasus, spiral galaxy, mag=13.4, size=1.3’x0.6’, SBr=13.0):
The brightest of the fleas, this one was a small and obvious oval just off the northeastern side of NGC 7331. It was clearly elongated and displayed a bright core at 110x.

NGC 7340 (Pegasus, elliptical galaxy, mag=13.7, size=0.9’x0.6’, SBr=13.0):
The second brightest of the dog’s irritants was even smaller and just slightly dimmer. More of rounded oval, it also displayed some central brightness at 110x.

NGC 7337 (Pegasus, barred spiral galaxy, mag=14.4, size=1.1’x0.7’, SBr=14.0):
This dim little flea was a very weak rounded concentration off the southeastern side of NGC 7331. It was difficult at all magnifications, but still evident. A dim field star was right next to the galaxy, which didn’t help its visual presentation either. Finally can add this one to the log.

NGC 7336 (Pegasus, spiral galaxy, mag=14.5, size=0.8’x0.4’, SBr=13.1):
Finally the last and dimmest of the four fleas was this little pip just north of NGC 7335. It was tenuous at 110x, and still quite weak visually at 199x and 297x. It presented as nothing more than a small and very dim dust mote of diffuse light. But finally in the log.
Alan

Thank you Jim, its a bit tricky, definitely. My camera is not suited for the scope as the pixels are quite small... but there are ways to sample to avoid star bloat, etc.

(sound of jaw dropping) - that adds so much to this story Alan, just superb. :text-thankyoublue: My appreciation for my targets, not to say my understanding of them just took a leap!

The mag 15.9 LEDA 2051985 is especially interesting. I masked it and separated it from the stars when I processed this image (GAME script in Pixinsight), and did so in ignorance of its name or designation.

All the best Alan, and thanks for your input. We make a pretty nice team, ha ha.
