M81
I have worked on M81 a few times mostly ending up tracking down problems with my gear. After replacing the Paracorr II with my trusty Baader MPCC Mark III and adding a light shield, things started working the way they should. During my first try last week the autoguiding was horrible but that was entirely my fault - sloppy calibration. Two nights ago, I took this image. Stats: 10x5 min LRGB, ASI2600MM, G11S/OnStep, Gimp . I have not tried removing the stars with Starnet v2 yet, may try this later but I'm done for tonight.
PS : I had to do a meridian flip and somehow, after restarting the autoguider, I got an offset that caused me to have to crop the image quite a bit. This also affected the image in that the LRGB parts did not line up precisely, resulting in chromatic stars. Oh well next time better. Next year maybe.

Re: M81
That is quite a nice M81 for only 50 minutes!
Sorry to hear about the flip offset. Plate solving tolerance?
It seems that calibration is everything, at least for PHD2 anyway.
Glad that things are working well for you!

Re: M81
Thanks Jim. Actually it's 10x5 LRGB each, so 200 minutes.
I did the flip manually because I have to move the light shield around, and recentered using plate solving. I think I set the step size for my autoguiding too large so when I started autoguiding and it went a bit past the starting point during calibration it may have taken one staep too many. I don't know if initial backlash can affect this. Next time I will take more smaller steps. I need to check if Ekos can start autoguiding without calibration after a flip.
Yes, last time I took too few calibration steps and the angles were off by 45 degrees. I thought there was somethkng funny going on. The subs were mostly bad. I learn every time.
It's about time! Having a lot of gear and a 12"-er is nice but has its challenges. Just moving equipment over to a different

Re: M81
It will work fine for smaller sensors but the tube is quite long, which I think is the cause of the vignetting. So far the Baader MPCC Mark III is the champ. I'll try a bit more to confirm then maybe put the Paracorr up for sale.BABOafrica wrote: ↑Sat Mar 12, 2022 2:43 pmSome nice detail there.

Hi Henk. A superb M81 galaxy image in LRGB. And, despite some technical problems during the data collection, you still came away with a beautiful capture. Nice sparkly spiral arms, dust cloud lanes, and central core details. Thanks for sharing this fine work with us on here Henk and congratulations on receiving the TSS APOD Award today.

Re: M81
Here's my final M81. I did an initial stretch of the LRGB layers in Gimp by first setting the black level in levels, then applying the same stretch curves to all layers. I then created a mask around the stars and the bright part of the galaxy and applied my Scilab gradient algorithm to the masked area. Then composed the RGB layers in Gimp , applied L as luminosity and removed the stars from the result with Starnetv2. Working on the stars I saw that the R layer had an offset that caused chromaticity so I corrected that, re-stretched the layers such that the star sizes were about the same, combined them and added them to the starless image. I would have liked to retain more of the original stars to make it look more natural but the stars were not of great quality so I left it as is. Clearly I sharpened it a bit too, which I forgot in the earlier versions.
