Sh2-284 HOO

#1

Post by jthommes »

This image is of Sh2-284 also known as LBN 983 and LBN 984. It doesn't receive a lot of attention from imagers - likely due to the fact that the very popular Rosette nebula is only 5 degrees to the northwest. I have sometimes seen references calling Sh2-284 the "Little Rosette". Sh2-284 is an emission nebula at about 17,000 light years distant and is located in the Norma (Outer) arm of the Milky Way. It is illuminated by members of the star cluster Dolidze 25. Within the structure is LBN 986 and LBN 987.

The core area of the open cluster Dolidze 49 is also visible in this image. There are two other objects of interest - IR Bubble [HKS2019] E80 and E84. Normally we would not see these in a visible spectrum image, however, they have an associated visible emission component that does show up in Ha, so we can see evidence of them in this image.

Image and details can be accessed at the link below (or by clicking on the Sh2-284 Nebula thumbnail below). The annotated image has a link below but it can also be accessed from the main image webpage as well. The full FOV image can be accessed from the image webpage and has an image scale of 1.39 arcsec/pixel.

That's a unique target I've not seen before and thx for the info you always include. As usual that's a mighty fine image Jim!
Did you by chance have a bit of a collimation issue with the Comet Hunter, the stars seem to be slightly wonky. It certainly doesn't detract from the image though.

Hello Jim,

this is a woderful deep and very detailed capture of this nebula, with the stars formation in the Norma outer spiral Arm!

For the visual observers,
the nebula is found west of the NGC 2301 open cluster (which looks like a row of fairly bright stars), and off the 3 stars Einstein's Asterism with the double SO 157. The Einstein's asterism is seen in the astrophoto at far left.
First time seen through the 82mm Leica APO Televid in Silva Plana (Swiss Alps), on March 15th, 2017,
then confirmed through the 15x85 binoculars with the blue(RGB)CCD filters in Lillinghof Airfield (Bortle 3), on January 23rd, 2020.

This capture shows a fantastic piece of the astrophysics, and resolved into the details,

Thanks for the comment Alex!
I do like the MN152 Mak-Newt, but it can be fussy at times. I think the collimation varies with temperature. More times then not I get the triangular bright stars. You can see them in the full size image. I don't know how much low surface brightness nebulosity is impacted in the image. No real help for the stars that I can see off hand. I guess I have learned to live with them. I don't get them with the Edge 9.25 Ha or the FSQ.

Well, I had heard of Einstein's cross, but not Einstein's asterism. Sure enough, I see references to that name on the internet. Thanks for the introduction!
