Tadpoles + Spider + Fly Nebulae - HOO

#1

Post by STEVE333 »

On one side of the Tadpoles Nebula is the Flaming Star Nebula. Going the opposite direction one finds the Spider and Fly Nebulae. The Tadpoles, Spider and Fly nebulae are the targets in this image. Had two very clear nights in a row which allowed for capturing Ha one night and Oiii the next. I had the best guiding I've ever had with the total RMS in the 0.5-0.8" range. I captured 48 10 minute images and not one had to be discarded due to "guiding errors". The improvement comes courtesy of JayTee (if I remember correctly) who shared the idea of putting a small rotationally adjustable weight on the counterbalance arm to allow correction for off-center weight (like a focusing motor or filter wheel). The picture below shows my implementation using a "SMALLRIG" super clamp (camera accessory) that has 1/4" & 3/8" threaded holes. As suggested by JayTee I used a 1/4-20 bolt to attach several washers to add a little weight. After balancing the rig with the camera and telescope horizontal the mount is then repositioned to the "zero position" and the clamp is rotated until the mount remains in the "zero position --> PERFECT BALANCE. I actually then unbalance slightly to produce a slightly East-heavy balance to eliminate any RA backlash issues.

IMG_1534.jpg

Anyway, the picture below shows the modified HOO (R = Ha, G = 70% Oiii + 30% Ha, B = Oiii) result.
HOO_Enhjanced_LRGB.jpg

IMAGE DETAILS:
Equipment:
W.O. Star71 telescope, 3 nm Chroma Ha & O3 filters, ASI1600MM camera (-15C, Gain=140), CEM40 mount, Orion MMAG autoguider, StarLite stepper motor (focusing)

Mount/ASI1600MM camera/Filter wheel/MMAG autoguider/Focusing stepper motor all controlled remotely using APT. APT is on a laptop in the house which is connected by WEme 4-port USB 2.0 extender system with 40 ft ethernet cable connecting the equipment outside to the laptop inside the house.

Images:
24x600 sec Ha, 24x600 sec O3 (Total Exposure 8 hr), 24 Darks, 30 Flats, 30 Flat Darks

Software:
Captured with APT, Guided with PHD2, Processed with PixInsight

Thanks for looking.

Thanks Henk. First time I've imaged this area. There seems to be Ha all over the place. I tried to bring some of it out. If all of it is brought out it overwhelms the nebulae.

That's a real nice shot. Also really like this solution, I'm going to have to give it a try. When my filter wheel is in the 90 degree position it can really throw things off.

There sure is Ha all over the place!

There is almost no area in the fov without color!

Thanks.
In the past I wasn't able to find a position for the counterweight that would balance the mount both when the counterweight bar was horizontal and in the zero position. It usually required too much East-heavy unbalance in the horizontal position in order to still have any East-heavy unbalance when the telescope was aiming at lower altitudes. Now I can satisfy both while still having a very small East-heavy unbalance. I think the very small part is what made the difference. Time will tell.

The link below is to a clamp like the one I'm using:

Running out of complements to describe the work you are doing, just great. Your balancing equipment seems to work very well when guiding give you results like this.

Excellent image Steve - well done. Congrats on the APOD

Balancing I want to be clear on your approach: You achieve what I have heard others call a "3D balance". DEC axis is balanced in the horizontal position by sliding the OTA to the position where it doesn't favor any rotational direction (RA axis is horizontal as well). Then you move the DEC axis to the vertical position while RA remains horizontal and adjust the rotational weight so that the DEC axis again doesn't favor any axis rotational direction. Am I right so far in what you meant? You said this is the "zero position" - for iOptron "zero position" is counter weight down - not horizontal - so I don't' think "zero position" in the iOptron context is what you meant?

RA axis is then balanced conventionally - right? So now you would be in a "3d balance". (and then you make east side heavy, if desired, to stabilize against RA backlash)

I have experienced very good guiding in this balance arrangement - when it is calm. I find it more challenging when breezy. I can help RA by making east side heavy (up to the limit of stalling your RA motor), but DEC is more problematic. PhD2 backlash compensation is somewhat of a help - but usually after the fact of an error. I was wondering if you had any ideas. I have heard solutions of unbalancing DEC or deliberately offsetting polar alignment. These seem to be undesirable solutions since they are target DEC coordinate dependent or meridian / horizon dependent.

I was just wondering if you had any more workable solutions for a breezy session. Also, perhaps this discussion is best moved to another forum - feel free to move / start it elsewhere.
