Bubble and Co

#1

Post by Gmetric »

Hey everyone :). As mentioned in the title, this image is of the Bubble Nebula, Cassiopeia Salt-and-Pepper Cluster, the Northern Lagoon Nebula and a faint Claw Nebula. It was taken over four nights with the SW72ED, 0.8 reducer/flattener, IDAS D1 LPF and modified Canon 750d in Bortle 7 skies and near a big LED street lamp. It's 156 x 150-second exposures @ iso-400, stacked in DSS with flat and bias master frames. The camera temp was around 32 deg C on average, so pretty noisy. Hopefully, I'll add some HA when the new filter arrives and when it cools off a touch. I hope you like it :)
Bubble and Co final small.jpg
Slight edit to improve the contrast and bring out the claw a little more. Better or worse? if so, why? :)

Nice image Gmetric.

It will be interesting to see the comparison with your new filter when it arrives.

Thats a great image. For a 750D at 32c you have handled the noise really well. Its a great FOV.

Thanks :) I love the FOV too, getting the stars pinpoint to the edges is a pig. I'm using a filter box tonight, and it won't play ball. The 750d seems to be inherently a bit noisy, but at 32c, It's noticeable. I did do darks, but given the different temps on different nights, stacking with the darks I had didn't work so well, so I left them out and just used flats and bias and tried not to stretch it so much.

Thanks, Steve. Having been on a hiatus for a while and followed the fantastic progress you've made, I've been itching to get back into it. I'm hoping to move on a similar trajectory as yours as you seem to have gotten yourself into a situation where you are producing absolutely wonderful images. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, It's motivating and inspirational.

@Gmetric I am not a technical expert, and I don't know what it should actually look like, but (for me at least) it looks much more defined and colourful.

I don't think you are over cooking yet. In the wider field images I like the second better also as the definition is better. I thought a little about whether it was truncated at the low luminance end but decided not.

Cheers, nFA :) Appreciate it. I prefer the second of the wide field images too. Indeed luminance truncation would impact the perception of contrast and I felt the first image lacked contrast and seemed a little flat. Hence, the second image. If I can get some decent HA images I might add a little as luminance and see what happens. In fact, I could create an artificial luminance image and see what happens when added. Were you thinking along those lines? Thanks again 😊
