HFG-1 and Abell-6, HOO

#1

Post by KathyNS »

Planetary nebulae HFG-1 (upper-left) and Abell-6 (lower-right). This is how I made use of the unusually long run of clear, moonless nights this week. HFG-1 is zipping through the galaxy at between 29 and 59 km/s, producing a bow shock and leaving a long tail.

Thanks.

The Abell catalogue of planetary nebulae is a great resource if you want to consume dark-sky imaging time! All the nebulae are astoundingly dim and require multiple nights to pick them out of the noise. But some are well worth the effort.

I was browsing to find an Abell object worthy of several clear nights. Abell 6 was kind of ho-hum, but when I saw HFG-1, I knew I had to get the pair.

Abell-31 is another one that is well worth the effort: one of the largest planetaries in the sky, similar in angular size to HFG-1.
