The Elephant Trunk Nebula - SHO

#1

Post by depratnt »

Hey all!

I wanted to share with you my most recent project - The Elephant Trunk Nebula. This entire data set was troubling to gather. I threw away more than half of my Oiii and Sii data but was lucky enough to keep every sub of my HA data. The smoke thickened late last week and prevented me from gathering quality O2 and s2 signal. That being said, I was able to salvage the best frames and create a photo!

The Elephant Trunk Nebula - An SHO rendition consisting of about 20hrs of total data. This huge pillar of gas spans nearly 20 light years tall and is a region of active star formation!

For this image, I really wanted to accentuate the alien like structure by highlighting the greens and the blues. I am sure I will do a more classic orange/blue version here soon. I hope you all enjoy. We're getting closer to fall and Halloween and I think this target is about as spooky as you can get. Clear skies everyone :)

Equipment:
cem60
asi294mm
10" f/3.9 newtonian
Astrodon 3nm SHO filters
20hrs total data
600s subs unity gain
integerResample x2

Words fail me. What an incredible image! I would happily part with hard-earned cash to have something like that on my wall. You said you wanted to accentuate the "alien-like" structures. Well, the first words that came from my wife were, "Wow, that looks like something from Alien." So I would say that you have succeeded. Congratulations.
