North American Nebula and Dust Lane

#1

Post by jthommes »

This image is a first for me - it's the first time I have connected a dedicated astro camera and FW to a DSLR lens (Sigma 150 APO). The short backfocus of the ASI294 camera allows the FW connection in the optics train and still achieve the lens flange backfocus requirement. The result is a 7.37 degree FOV (in the major axis).

The target is the North American Nebula region (NGC 7000, LBN 373, Sh2-117). In this field are multiple LBN and LDN cataloged items Only selected LBN's are annotated because there are so many. The field also includes the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070, LBN 350), IC 5068 (LBN 328), and the Gulf of Mexico Nebula (LDN 935) The major dust lane that runs approximately vertically through the field consists of LDN 914, 935, 936, 940 941, 945, 950).

There are a few other interesting objects: Dark nebulae Barn 349 and 352, Open Clusters Berkeley 54 and NGC 6997, Planetary Nebula NGC 7027 (PK84-3.1) Deneb peeks in from the right side of the image. Although the image scale doesn't do justice to the open clusters and planetary nebula.

Image and details can be accessed at the link below (or by clicking on the North American Nebula thumbnail below). The annotated image has a link below but it can also be accessed from the main image webpage as well. The full FOV image can be accessed from the image webpage and has an image scale of 7.0 arcsec/pixel.

Really nice image Jim.

I'll bet it was fun setting up a different imaging system.

A fine image especially when opened up in full resolution.

 Thanks for the comments folks!

I still need to work a little on camera tilt and I'm not quite sure if this lens is up to expectations on optics. Not sure how much time I want to spend on this image train. I like the idea of a big field like this and I could still double the image scale by going to 1x1 bin with the ASI294. The question is whether or not I can make the optics good enough (Camera tilt resolved or stopped down a bit more on the optics) for the increased image scale.

This was a fun exercise and I might try to do a few more pics with this setup. But focus is manual and very sensitive. I'm not sure I want to try to rig up something up to auto-focus.

Here is the kicker - I piggybacked the lens and camera on the FSQ-106 scope on the big G11 mount. I actually used the FSQ as a guide scope! Probably the most expensive guide scope I have ever used. And this setup probably doesn't even need guiding at this image scale.

Yeah, it was kinda fun to set this up. But as I say in the previous post, I wish it could be a bit better - enough to support a 1x1 bin on the ASI294M on a full resolution image at 1x1. But as you say, this (max resolution) image at 2x2 and down sampled just a little bit from the native camera resolution is still a good view.

Your new setup yields a wonderfully wide FOV Jim. The beautiful processing and the wide FOV really put this region into perspective. Well done.
