Yes, it is bold and yes, it is saturated. I guess that it is overdone in every way!

I was just having fun with my first light image with my new Sharpstar 61 EDPHII scope.

Still using the same camera (and will be for quite awhile), the ASI533MC-P. Very much under sampled with this configuration.

This is only a small portion of the image. I like the tendrils details, so I went with it. Actually, I saw an image on Google images with similar coloration that I liked, so I bent the processing that way.

NGC6369 supersize!
9-15-3ps_crop.jpg
Extracted from the full image where Pickering's Triangle was the main target.
9-15-3ps sm.jpg
May be too much for some folks and I understand that.

I just figured out the basics of producing a drizzled image in Pixinsight and I am working on it now. Amazing how huge files become when drizzling. What takes 20 seconds for a process to execute, takes 2-5 minutes for a drizzled image.

One thing about it though, the stars are amazing. Nice and round and very smooth.

We will see. I will share.

Have a nice evening all!
Jim

Thanks JT. I know it somewhat looks like a neon sign!

Nice to be able to push the data like that.

The little scope looks promising!

I’ll post something more reasonable soon.

Thanks Steve @Mac , Marius @MariusD69 , Bob @bobharmony , and Vanessa @Butterfly Maiden !

Glad that you like it Bob!

It is a bit strong for me. Everyone has their own taste and that is one of the cool parts of this hobby. The basic data is there and how it is presented is an individual taste. The data can be revisited again with a different flair on the result, but it’s the same data!

I’m working on the repro now. It will be somewhat less bold, with more teal colored tendrils and filaments. The biggest reason for the repro is for me to learn drizzling. I am way undersampled with this scope/ camera at 2.8 arcsec/pixel. The drizzled stars look great and I’m hoping that adds to the repro too.

Biggest thing is that I am happy with the Sharpstar 61’s first light.

Thanks all!
Jim

Beautiful Jim! For my education, did you use filters, and what is the integration time? If you did not use filters I am curious how much PI reduced the stars. I'm thinking about buying PI and star reduction would be the number 1 reason, Gimp just doesn't do that and using StarNet++ every time gets old. I think you could easily reduce the saturation, and add a non saturated stars only image to a starless image to get some colors in those stars.

I'm so sorry Henk!

I was working with the new drizzled version while taking Adam Block's PI Fundamentals course and I quickly posted the original process just for fun. I'm not the best multitasker!

I did not include any capture information!

145 subs of 120 seconds (about 4.8 hours of total integration) with my ASI533MC-P on 9-2-21 with a gain of 104 at 0C. L-eNhance filter.

Captured with N.I.N.A. and guided with PHD2. Processed in Pixinsight with a touch of saturation and NR in Photoshop Camera Raw.

As far as star reduction, there are several ways that I have encountered in my inexperience so far. I'm sure that there are more ways and better ways to use the processes that I am mentioning.

Starnet++ is integrated into PI which makes using it very handy. It works quite well for me, but not so much for this image. Starnet++ produced artifacts that I could't repair on the tendrils to the left of star 52 Cygni (NGC 6960). So, I didn't use Starnet++ on this image. I did use Morphological Transformation which did a pretty good job, but I had to tread lightly because it seemed to bridge the dim stars making them look like lines (very undesirable). There is, however a new script available called Star De-Emphasizer by Astroswell that works quite well. To use the script, you need to separate the stars from the image with Starnet++ to create a starless version. Then the script de-emphasizes the stars in the non-linear image that you are working with. The script works quite well.

Another thing that I noticed since processing this image is that Starnet++ works better on images that are stretched using a different process in PI. For instance, when working with the new process, I used the process MaskedStretch to make the image non-linear.
Starnet++ did a really good job at removing the stars and leaving a fairly clean starless image. The original stretch that I used was a basic STF stretch. I know that this terminology sounds unfamiliar, but what I am trying to say is that I am learning new things all of the time!!!

If you do go the PI route, I think that you will find that the software is deep, but the learnings and power of the application is amazing.

Hope that this helps some!
Jim

Very helpful, thanks! With the L-enhance the stars won't have much color though the filter is great for this target. It explains why the stars don't take over the entire image.

I am hoping to do something similar with the Astrocat 51. I've used it a few times on the AVX and I was pleased. It is great for star fields but for faint targets the stars take over and you need a filter.

Thanks David!

Definitely neon. Just caught my fancy at the time.

So far with the reprocess, drizzling really produces nice stars, but the extra disk space and much longer processing times are taking away from its charm somewhat. In the end, by the time that the stars are reduced (and the certainly dominate this field), it is looking like there isn't enough difference to justify the extra processing. It really an amazing process (drizzling), but the view might not me worth the climb at least for this target.

Hey Mark!

Thanks for your nice words. The Sharpstar is really a joy to use. I had to mount a 10" dovetail to the bottom to the original 4" to get balance, but except for that little mod, it is so easy to drag around and set up and it weighs very little.

Yeah, the view isn't as large as it would be with a larger sensor camera, but they are 3-4 times wider than my ES scope. Lots of fun!!!

Thanks buddy!

Fantastic image Jim. This is a lowish north object for me. Tried it a few weeks ago but with the short imaging window, didn't get as much depth as you.

Thanks Joe!

Man, Joe, I can’t imagine Bortle 1-2 skies!
Good for you!!!
Jim
