NGC 6888 and a what I thought was a dust mote

#1

Post by starfield »

We got a small reprieve from the June gloom and the local astronomers rejoiced. I decided to start working on NGC 6888, the Crescent Nebula, as the constellation Cygnus is nicely positioned in my sky. I captured 55 subs each in HA and O3, 300sec, 120 gain, over 3 nights.

After the the second night, I did a quick process and noticed a new dust mote had shown up on the image. "I should have taken another set of flats," I said to myself. After the third night, and a quick process, there was the mote again. This time, with a little more data, I noticed it was a bubble! I bumbled upon the Soap Bubble, (PN G75.5+1.7). Doh!

I've cropped this tight as I wanted to highlight the bubble. This image was processed entirely in PI which is new to me and tackled Pixel Math for the first time. I did a couple small color tweaks in photoshop but that was it. I am thinking of trying to sharpen it a smidge, but so far results have ended in disaster. I also have a set of RGB data that I shot with this that I'll try and fold in. I now have plenty of post-processing projects lined up for the inevitable return of the gloom.

Let me know what you think. Any PI tips for improving this would be much appreciated as well. Clear Skies.

That's a great Crescent Nebula and Bubble image. I've not heard of the Soap Bubble before!

And what is the black blob between the two surrounded by a ring of stars?

Regards

Graeme

Yes. Soap Bubble was a surprise for me too. From what I've read it was discovered in 2007. As for the blob, I'm not sure. I've looked at a couple of other images and it doesn't seem to be an artifact.

Great image Steve. But you should claim great composition and planning to get the bubble and NGC 6888.

About that dark spot and ring of stars... NED only shows IR sources in the area and Simbad identifies one of the stars in the ring. So it doen't seem to be anything notable.
