M92: The "Other" Magnificent Globular Star Cluster In Hercules

#1

Post by umasscrew39 »

A beautiful, often overlooked globular cluster due to its proximity to M13, M92 has a lot to offer in star power. With over 330,000 blue, yellow, orange and white stars, it shines at an apparent magnitude of +6.3 from the constellation Hercules. Discovered by Johann Elert Bode in 1777 and then re-discovered by Messier in 1781, M92 is approximately 26,700 light-years from our solar system.

Unfortunately, persistent high-level clouds did not allow me to do this beautiful DSO justice. I need to do this again next season and for many more hours. The hot, humid weather is now upon us in Florida, so it makes no sense to try this further at the moment.

Here are 3 views (widefield and cropped) of this awesome cluster with its subtle colorful stars.

Yeah, this is a very pretty globular. Wide view and crops are a good look at it.
