When the best optics in your arsenal is a 300 mm lens, galaxy season can be tough going. Well, at least I tried.

There's a long stretch of clear nights around new moon in May and before I realized it I had collected over 17 hours on M101, 9 hours of which went into the stack. Another 4 hours of Ha data is still sitting on my hard drive.

With only 300 mm FL, this image is a big crop and it really needs more pixels, but for now, that will have to do.

Stacked in DSS and post-processed in Photoshop and Lightroom

It may be a crop, but the depth from all those hours really shows. Well done!

Nice job with only 300mm fl. This is a tough target with the right equipment let alone without enough fl to enlarge it. Your hours of data collection helped make this a very nice image. congratulations of the TSS APOD.

Hello Jonathan. A very nice M101 (Pinwheel Galaxy) image from you here. This is excellent work with just a 300mm lens. The cropping held up well, as you still have excellent contrast, a nice core, and sparkly spiral arms. Thanks for sharing this with us on here Johathan, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award today.
