M81, M82 and NGC 3077

#1

Post by jon.s »

M81, M82, and NGC 3077, taken over 3 nights back in early to mid March.

Out of the 7 hours of good data collected, DSS was able to stack only 5 hours with reasonable sharpness. Added the remaining 2 hours of data causes the final stacked image to get quite fuzzy. My theory is that DSS is unable to handle the geometric distortion of the lens as the targets were captured on different parts of the sensor on different nights.

Couple of folks from my local club provided good pointers on noise reduction and chromatic aberration, which really helped improve this image.

Hopefully I’ll get to collect some Ha data to add to this image before the targets dip too low for the rest of the year.

Imaging: Canon EOS T4i, EF 300 mm f/4L IS lens, Astronomik L2 filter, APT
