Bear Hunt NGC3079

Another from the Great Bear hunt, NGC 3079, The Phantom Frisbee. Don't know where Stellarium came up with that moniker, but it fits. Rather large almost edge-on spiral with some strangeness happening in the central regions. Ended up with less than the hour after tossing some, only 48 minutes of 'point and shoot', no darks, flats, bias, sweat. Sky condition a week back were good and 46F.

Imaged thru Meade 16 LX200 at f 5.9 with Starizona reducer, and ASI1600MC-cool OSC camera, 200 gain, 50 offset, -20C, 24 of 30/2 min subs. Guided in 4 inch SCT at 2 sec rate. Captured and stacked in Nebulosity, final in PS CS5, posted image 30% cropped and a third full size.

Hello Steve. A superb NGC 3079 image. I love your nice wide angle capture, and I can make out MGC 9-17-9 slightly higher and to the right. Thanks for sharing this with us on here Steve, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award today.

Very well done and congrats Steve. While I am not a fan of nicknames for objects as a rule, the "Phantom Frisbee" does seem to fit this one fairly well. I see I've only observed it once, about eight years ago from my backyard with the 10 inch. It was pretty bright and quite thin and elongated since it is only about 2° from being fully edge-on from our perspective. Its core was bright, befitting its Seyfert-II nature. Thanks for such a beautiful image and working on objects more off the beaten track.
