So last night went out and shot my first ever narrowband sequence. Goal was just to get everything to work and to my surprise, it did. Here's the Monkey Head shot at 240s, 300g and 20 subs each HA, OIII, and SII. Super quick process here, but I got a picture! Hope to get more data the next couple of nights.
I went ahead and took the plunge with PI. Went ahead and calibrated, registered, and stacked this in PI. Did the rest of the processing in StarTools with a few tweaks in photoshop. This seems like a whole new world in terms of post-processing and so much to learn. Thanks to @Steve333 for inspiring me to give this a go and giving me some great pointers.
And, BTW, Where is the Monkey in this?

Yes, PI is an amazing application. I’m having fun with it too!

Rotate the image right 90 degrees and then the face will be on the left.
Thanks, Steve and thanks for the APOD all.
Did some more "monkeying around' with the image. Grabbed 4 more hours of data and played more with some of the SHO color combos in Startools to get this. Which colors do folks like? Also rotated it 90 and can see the Monkey. Thinking you could take this and overlay Thor's helmet and create a new nebula, The Viking!

Excellent image of an intriguing object. The colors are excellent. I observed this visually from our suburban backyard using my 12 inch about four years ago, but of course it was quite subtle, even with an O-III filter.
For edification there are two NGC numbers associated with this complex. What is called the "Monkey's Head" is NGC 2175, and a bright knot in the northwestern section is NGC 2174. There seems to be a proliferated error in terms of labeling this nebula. The actual nebula is sometimes listed as NGC 2174 while its embedded cluster is listed as NGC 2175. In reality NGC 2175 is an emission nebula with embedded cluster (OCL-476) while the bright knot in the northwestern quadrant is NGC 2174. It is interesting how such mistakes keep going even in otherwise reliable sources.
The nebula, NGC 2175, was discovered by Carl Christian Bruhns in 1857, though some sources indicate that it may have been seen before 1654 by Giovanni Hodierna. NGC 2174, the bright knot, was discovered by Édouard Stephan in 1877.

Hello Steve. A fantastic Monkey Head image in narrow band. I really enjoy the colors and details in both versions. Thanks for sharing these with us Steve, and congratulations on winning the TSSAPOD Award today.

Nice images, Steve. I am partial to the second image with more time. It appears to have a tad more detail to my eye, while the original image was a bit overdone to me (people who have seen my images are laughing at me right now).
