Hello Jim. Both images are fantastic. I kind of like the first version a little more, as the contrast is deeper and the colors are a little more vivid. However, both are great works from you. Thanks for sharing these with us Jim, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award today.

bobharmony wrote: Tue Dec 15, 2020 2:50 am That is some very nice data, Jim, and a pair of fine processes. To me there are aspects of both that I like. In the first runthrough the reflection nebulae seem to come out better than the PI version. On the other hand the detail of the Flame and the vibrance of the Ha around the Horsehead is fabulous in the PI result. It is always difficult to make these processing choices, now if there was a way to mash them together!

Bob
This is also how I see it with the additional remark that ionization fronts look nicely crisper in the first version. Finding a way to combine the virtues of both processes would make them even more breathtaking.

Jim,
Okay, to start with "hdrmultiscaletransform" is one darn long word... no wonder Pixinsight has a somewhat difficult learning curve...
Both photos are very pleasing to look at and I find things I like in both of them, just as others do.
Congratulations on a well deserved APOD!!
This is one of my bucket list images to capture as soon as I get to use my newly acquired imaging telescope and camera set up.
Thank you for sharing these photos.

Hi Joe, thank you. I like the second too.

Lots of nice comments on the first though and that is great since it is my image too!

Believe it or not, HDRMultiscaleTransform (one word) is very familiar to lots of folks here! Just learning it myself. Most astrophoto processing software has some sort of HDR process/module and it is a very new tool in PI for me.

If I decide to purchase it at the end of the trial on 1/14/21 (which I probably will), I will be learning how to use it for the rest of my life!

Looking forward to your upcoming images!

Thank you for your nice comments Kerry!

As not-AF commented, you might be able to get the best of both with a re-pro.

I too like both. That's some pretty good color. Most of the images I've seen with the L-Enhance or L-Extreme filters make the Flame appear too red. I like it bright orange. You've done a nice job with it. Congrats on your APOD!

I agree with you both. On a steep learning curve right now with PI and know that I can get a better process in time. Just needed to leave it alone for now. i plan to give it another go soon. Thanks Joe!

Hi Larry,

I must admit, after the PI process, it looked a bit too red to me too, so I gave it a bit of Photoshop magic to move the color to a more orangish hue.
Some like the reddish flame in the first process though. Everyone has a slight difference in taste and that is a good thing!

Thanks Larry!
