NGC 3938 and NGC 4013 Galaxies in Ursa Major

NGC 3938 is the main object in this field. It is a classic face-on spiral - SA(s)c. It's distance is somewhat vague for such a prominent galaxy. Early Tully-Fisher (redshift independent) measurements places it 18-19 million light years distant; a later Tully-Fisher place it at about 55 million light years; more current estimates (SNII optical) place it at about 71 million light years. Redshift distance measurement places it at about 48 million light years. I showed the 71 mly redshift independent estimate and the 48 mly redshift estimate in my annotation.

Also captured in this image the galaxy NGC 4013 - classified "Sb edge-on". Its distance estimate (by Tully-Fisher and redshift) are more consistent and range from about 49 to 58 million light years. Arp 62 (APG 62) is also seen. It is a distorted galaxy pair with an estimated distance of about 240 to 280 million light years. A better image scale would do a better job on this object. There are a number of background galaxies and Quasars (I annotated the brighter ones). The full size image shows these best. The furthest Quasar that is still reasonably visible in the image has a redshift of 2.205.

Thanks Steve. Yeah, I have focused a bit on the Astronomy part of this hobby - its really fascinating to me. The Astrophotograhy is really fun too, but it is a bit of a means to get to the Astronomy part. Problem is, I am really just a rank amateur at the astronomy stuff. I guess like anything else, the more you learn about something, the more you realize what you really don't know.
