Messier 27

#1

Post by Dyno05 »

I shot this last night as a test to see if ISO 400 would work well. It did for this target. Much less noise and much better color. This photo is 54x150”
Shot with a Stock Canon T3i
Astro-Tech 80 EDT CF @ F7
Processed with DSS for stacking
Pixinsight for ABE, color calibration, noise reduction and masked stretch
Startools for sharpening
Gimp for saturation adjustment of the Nebula only. The stars colors are as stretched by PI.

Very nice, Dyno. I do a lot of single-frame and I've never tried dropping down to ISO400 for better dynamic range. The lowest I've been is ISO 800 and that did help a bit. I'll have to give 400 a whirl next time out which will be in about two weeks when Luna's skyglow is somewhat diminished. Both M57 Ring Nebula and M 27 Dumbbell are starting to rise into a more favorable position earlier in the evening.
Telescopes: Meade LX90 10-inch f/10 UHC Coma-free SCT; Explore Scientific 127mm f/7.5 APO ED triplet refractor; Explore Scientific 102mm f/7 APO ED triplet refractor; Explore Scientific 80mm f/6 APO ED triplet refractor; Skywatcher 72mm f/6 ED Schott doublet refractor; Meade 70mm f/5 APO quadruplet astrograph refractor; Skywatcher Quattro 8-inch f/4 Newtonian astrograph; Orion 6-inch f/4 Newtonian astrograph; Skywatcher SkyMax 180mm f/15 Maksutov; iOptron 150mm f/12 Maksutov; Orion f/9 Ritchey-Chretien RC astrograph
Eyepieces: Set of 7 Baader Hyperion eyepieces, 3 Meade 5000 glass handgrenades; 1970s era Japanese manufactured Meade 12.5mm Orthoscopic, and too many other eclectic eyepieces to list
Mounts: Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro mount; Orion Atlas EQ-G mount
Post-production Software: Not good enough … oh, okay ... Canon's proprietary CanoScan ArcSoft 9000F photoshop suite

I was having lots of noise issues and trouble with the star cores blowing out way before any other part of the image did. After a bunch of reading, it seemed to me that the higher the ISO the shallower the pixel well was. I also took three photos in my basement with only a night light on. One for 90 seconds at 1600 another at 180” at 800 and a whopping 360” at 400. 400 had MUCH less grain and looked so much better that I decided to give it a shot. The histogram was quite low and lower than I’m used to shooting but the subs looked great. The nebula was kind of dim but after stacking 54 there was plenty of data to play with. This photo was a breeze to process. I spent a quarter of the time I normally do because it was so clean.

Oh wow! Racked up another one! Thank you. I had an idea the other day. Would it be possible that every time you get a photo of the day you can get a little number next to the badge? Or get another badge. I think it would be cool to have an icon that displays how many somebody has gotten. I think this may be my fourth. Just an idea.

If you are using a computer you can just hold your mouse over the APOD icon beneath your profile and it will display how many you have.
