M92 and Some Background Friends

#1

Post by jthommes »

This is a large amount of time for a bright globular (6.45 hrs), but I wanted enough depth to catch some of the background galaxies. Also, I have offset M92 (aka NGC 6341) in the composition in order to pick up four fairly notable galaxies to the west (right) of M92. They are IC 4645 (dist unk); PGC59931 (dist unk); PGC 59938 (dist 396 mly); and PGC59984 (dist 363 mly).

There are several other background galaxies - some of which are in the annotated image. In addition, there are other visually apparent background galaxies (in the full size image) that are only cataloged in UV and IR surveys (if cataloged at all). I even got a couple of mid distance Quasars in the field.

Image and details can be accessed at the link below (or by clicking on the M92 thumbnail image); full size image can be accessed from the image webpage and has an image scale of 0.81 arcsec/pixel. The annotated image link is provided below, but that can also be accessed from the image webpage.

Beautiful image Jim - The extra time on target certainly enriches the colors of the stars.

Taking the extra time to make the galaxies visible creates a special image. Really nicely done.

Really nice image Jim! The inclusion of those galaxies in the framing makes it soo much more intersting.

Hello Jim. A superb M92 globular cluster image. Nice contrast, and lots of sparkly silver and gold stars in your capture on your website. And, I enjoyed the annotated version with the "neighbors" too. Thanks for sharing this excellent work with us on here Jim, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award today.

Thanks Gordon, I appreciate the recognition.

Steve, Graeme, Alex, Jim, Ian, Marius, Marshall, Bob,
Thanks for the comments on the image and on the inclusion of the galaxies and QSO's. I worried about doing a glob shot without the glob in the center. Glad you all liked it.
