E. Veil With New Camera

#1

Post by OhNo »

I finally had a semi decent night (not too much true darkness at 52 Lat at this time of year) to play with my new ZWO ASI533MC Pro. I'm a bit rusty with post processing due to an extended period away from attempting it.... Well after midnight and before the Sun and moon rise (~0230 hrs) is all I could get for imaging time. Out of the 10 5 minute images I captured 2 were discarded due to vivid satellite trails, the remainder were stacked in DSS and processed in PI.

I am struggling to find reference material anywhere for gain and offset for my imaging combination. I think I jacked the gain a wee bit too high. But, It was were I needed to be on the histogram..... Anyway, here is what I ended up with!

Pretty capture OhNo - Definitely a bit on the Blue side.

If you can learn how to use the PixInsight WBPP script for "stacking" your images you can probably salvage your images with satellite trails. I get airplane trails all the time, but, the PI "stacking" removes all traces of the trails thus allowing more images to be stacked.

There is an excellent series of video tutorials by Adam Block on the WBPP script (link below). Just in case you are interestred.

https://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php? ... ies.14632/

Good luck,

Thanks Steve, I've used the PI Stacking before. If memory serves me correct you need at least 10 images and 10 of each F/B/D. I've also messed with APP,which IMO is excessively expensive. Will have another look at your link and decide.

I should have added that no F/D/B's were used in this image!!!! Up all day, and a lot of what most people would call night (dark)! :D Wasn't in the mood to capture F/D/B's At my latitude I should just put the imaging program on hold until mid to late July. Even when it's dark here you don't need a head lamp to wander a mine field!

I'm new to the CMOS sensor world. I learned from the tutorial that you don't use Bias frames with a CMOS sensor.

I just posted a tutorial on how to calibrate a CMOS sensor using PixInsight's WBPP script. You might find it interesting. Here is the link if you are interested.

Thx Alex, I saw you have a new camera in your line-up. Wrapping my head around the procedures for a Cooled CMOS camera and figuring out what not to forget from my DSLR procedures is giving me a headache. Just slipped out to go get some Flat frames, not setting up tonight, the breeze is East at 20km/hr supposed to ramp up until dark. West Central Sk. birthplace of glider fuel....... :flame:

Finally had a decent night for imaging. Wind was at 24km/hr from the SSW, not great but ....

After PMing Mac (Steve) I re-visited my Gain and off-set. I swung over to the E. Veil to have a similar target comparison. Things looked a lot better with the lower gain, and to be fair I used the same exposure length, and cooling (-15C). Now I need to re-visit my settings in DSS, the stacked image shows up debayered when I open it up in PI.

Processing is different with images from the 533 than it was with the DSLR. I even ventured into using a couple un-discovered tools in PI. While I'm not seeing what my mind envisions the E. Veil looks like, the process is keeping me from getting stale (still a vertical learning curve).

Here is what I got from last night.

So the Guy that sold me the ASI533MC Pro had a go at my data. As suspected it wasn't the camera, scope or software, it was the goomba that processed the previous images here!

He played with it and sent me back what It could look like if I figure out the post processing. The only criticism was that my focus was a wee bit soft. Not bad for a dummy huh!!!!

This is your best trial and process, Brent, in my humble opinion. Looking good. I like that camera of yours too... a bunch of my local astro buddies have this very model.

I went from shooting a Wide FOV like you're doing to not-quite-so-wide. I can't take the credit for the processing of the last image, the ZWO retailer gets that credit. I only took the out of focus data!!! There were not Flats or Dark frames either.

George was impressed with how little noise was in the data. He urged me not to give up on the 8" Quattro. I was thinkin' Williams Optics frac, but naaaaa! I have other ideas for my Astro budget that could help.

I agree, your Quattro is really a good scope... there is a guy here in town with one and he makes some amazing images.
