My NGC 7023 with a new camera

#1

Post by Larry 1969 »

Good day all!

I recently acquired a new (to me) ASI 071 MC Pro and this is it's first light!
It was quite an experience moving up from a DSLR. I had no idea how this camera worked and I had to learn all the differences in APT.
I figured out how to focus and use "Live view" but, since I didn't have the cable for the cooler, this image is uncooled. The sensor temp was 70F.
I did take 20 darks, 50 bias frames and figured out how to take 50 flats. I also forgot to mess with my gain and offset...
APT reported the gain as "0" and offset as "N/A" but this turned out surprisingly well for 82 X 180" exposures.

Side note: Processing this image was SUPER easy compared to my full spectrum modded T3i with no filter!
The image has much less noise and the colors were spot on! At least I think so! :D

Thanks for looking!

Larry

That's a great first light image Larry!

You must be well chuffed with your new camera.

Regards

Graeme

Outstanding, Larry, especially for first light with new camera. I particularly like the nebular detail and sharpness. That's not an easy DSO. I've yet to have any real success with imaging it myself.
Telescopes: Meade LX90 10-inch f/10 UHC Coma-free SCT; Explore Scientific 127mm f/7.5 APO ED triplet refractor; Explore Scientific 102mm f/7 APO ED triplet refractor; Explore Scientific 80mm f/6 APO ED triplet refractor; Skywatcher 72mm f/6 ED Schott doublet refractor; Meade 70mm f/5 APO quadruplet astrograph refractor; Skywatcher Quattro 8-inch f/4 Newtonian astrograph; Orion 6-inch f/4 Newtonian astrograph; Skywatcher SkyMax 180mm f/15 Maksutov; iOptron 150mm f/12 Maksutov; Orion f/9 Ritchey-Chretien RC astrograph
Eyepieces: Set of 7 Baader Hyperion eyepieces, 3 Meade 5000 glass handgrenades; 1970s era Japanese manufactured Meade 12.5mm Orthoscopic, and too many other eclectic eyepieces to list
Mounts: Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro mount; Orion Atlas EQ-G mount
Post-production Software: Not good enough … oh, okay ... Canon's proprietary CanoScan ArcSoft 9000F photoshop suite

Hi Larry. A very nice NGC 7023 image. Nice contrast and lots of pretty blue reflection nebulosity in your capture. You did a great job with the new (to you) ASI071 MC Pro camera. Thanks for sharing your work on here Larry, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award today.
