LoTr 5 - Planetary Nebula in Coma Berenices

#1

Post by bernhardhubl »

Hello group,

PN LoTr 5 (Longmore-Tritton 5) is a large, faint planetary nebula in the constellation of Coma Berenices in a distance of 1,650 light-years.

The central system at LoTr 5 is a binary star, which consists of an evolved G-type star (IN Comae Berenices) and a hot white dwarf that is responsible for ionizing the nebula. The white dwarf is one of the hottest stars known, with an effective temperature of about 150,000 K.

IN Comae Berenices is known to be a variable star, with its brightness varying on a cycle that is about 5.9 days long. This corresponds to the rotation period of the star, and the variability is attributed to starspots.

LoTr 5 has the highest galactic latitude of any known planetary nebula, being only 1.5 degrees away from the galactic north pole. This is the reason why so many distant galaxy clusters are visible in the field around this planetary nebula. See object identification image!

At first your title led me to think your post would be about "Lord of The Rings"... but I'm not disappointed!
That's a great image.

Reading up a bit on this star system, the white dwarf companion has some pretty impressive specs: 150,000K surface temperature!
I'm not convinced by the article references that the temperature is anything but an estimate, but if confirmed, would be amazing.
Decide for yourselves:

Hello Jean-Yves, Lady Fraktor, Marius, John, Steve and all others,

Thank you very much for your nice comments!

Steve: Thanks for the links to the article references.
I am not sure how resilient the statement of the effective temperature of 150,000 K is (It was mentioned in Wikipedia).

best,
Bernhard

That is a fine image Bernhard, with excellent structural detail and color. It is good to see an object that is not frequently targeted by the AP crowd. I have not tried it visually from our dark site with the 17.5 inch dob, but I have made a note to do so. It is also known as PN G339.9 + 88.4, and I thank you for posting your image of a rarely pursued object.

Beautiful image Bernard and congratulations on the apod!

In wikipedia, the text states 150,000K, but table on the right side of the Binary System section states 5400k. Either way, an amazing image of a very faint target! Nice work!

Hello Gordon, Marshall, Ruud, Michael, Jim, Larry and all others!

Thank you so much for your nice words!
In wikipedia, the text states 150,000K, but table on the right side of the Binary System section states 5400k. Either way, an amazing image of a very faint target! Nice work!
The 5400K is the effective temperature of the G5 star component.
The white dwarf, which is responsible for the ionisation of the nebula, has a much, much higher temperature. Maybe not 150,000 K, but sureley near or more than 50,000K.

best,
Bernhard
