M74, The Phantom Galaxy- LRGB

#1

Post by MariusD69 »

Hello!

I started the capture for this target last year, in November, but I couldn't finish then (bad RGB frames and too little exposure time for L). If you think that M101 is one of the faintest Messier objects, think again. Not for nothing they call it the Phantom Galaxy.
Now, with a total exposure of 11 hours and 16 minutes (all frames of 2 minutes), I think I have reached a satisfactory result. Far from perfect- I still have some gradients and a reflection ray into the field (I have it onto all frames, maybe it's a star on the edge of CC). Of course, if I had 3-4 hours of Ha, they would have been good to boost the emission nebulae into the arms. Maybe I'll try this in this season.
Clear skies!

Very nice Marius. You captured a lot of the faint nebulosity around the edges and I like your stars.

I came up with a PixelMath technique for removing the "reflection ray" that worked pretty well. I can show the result and technique if you are interested.

That is the one that made my eye hurt and nearly drove me crazy after three nights of trying to see it before I finally did, with my Infinity 80 from my Bortle 6 back yard! I am still trying to figure out how to get even with it! :flame:
